  1. The year in sports brought us a lot of joy, tears and excitement, not only for the athletes competing, but for Totallympics members around the world. As we say goodbye to the returning edition of our annual awards, here's hope that 2023 can also be a memorable year for all sports fans. For now, we'll remember the moments that united us in 2022, presenting the theme song for this edition: TISC winner "Superheroes", by Irish band The Script. Thank you all! Have a great year and until the next Totallympics Awards!

  5. Ireen Wüst SPEED SKATING Regarded as the most successful speed skater ever, Ireen Wüst first achieved a spot in the Dutch Olympic team in 2006. In Turin, she became the youngest Dutch gold medalist at the Winter Games, starting a sequence of results that would made history. Winning at least one gold medal in each of her Winter Olympic appearances, she is the only athlete to win an individual gold medal in five consecutive Olympics, Summer or Winter. Not only she is the most successful athlete from the Netherlands at the Olympics, in Beijing she also became the oldest Speed Skating gold medalist in the history of the Winter Games. "Words can't describe her class", said fellow competitor Brittany Bowe after the 1500m event at the 2022 Olympics; "she is the greatest of all-time, as her performance shows". Indeed, Wüst's career more than earned her a place in our Hall of Fame. @vinipereira

I wonder who (but deserved of course, I don't follow ice hockey enough to really know, but from what I'm reading he is truly a remarkable athlete!)

  16. Roger Federer TENNIS To say that Federer is one of the most successful players of all time is a understatement. Making his ATP debut in 1998, he went to win his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2003 at age 21, and since then his dominance has been undeniable. He was ranked the number one player in the world for 310 weeks, which includes a record 237 consecutive weeks, winning 103 ATP singles tournaments (the second most of all time) and 20 Grand Slam titles. A four-time Olympian, he won a gold medal in doubles (2008) and a silver in singles (2012), being the flagbearer for Switzerland in Athens and Beijing Games. Having struggled with a knee injury for the past years, Federer played his final professional-level tournament in 2022. The match (his 1750th on the tour) marked the end of an era – one that made sports history. @vinipereira

  17. Serena Williams TENNIS Often referred to as the greatest women's tennis player ever, Serena Williams' "evolving away from tennis" announcement made her career and overall contributions to sport a particularly standout story in 2022 despite a lack of on-court success. Having debuted on the WTA Tour in 1995, Williams reached the world number 1 ranking in the summer of 2002, a position she occupied a remarkable 317 times overall. Williams' 23 career Grand Slam singles titles is second all-time, and she has 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, to boot. As an Olympian, Williams certainly made her mark, earning four gold medals across four Summer Games, and tying her sister Venus with the most Olympic tennis gold in history. William's mark has been felt off-the-field as well, as a fashion icon, mother, and business woman who has moved onto society and financial pages, remaining a role model for how to crossover successfully beyond sports. @Games and Rings

  18. Shaun White SNOWBOARD Shaun White is, undoubtedly, one of the world's most prolific snowboarders. Between 2003-2013, he won 13 Winter X Games titles in Snowboarding slopestyle and superpipe (Olympic half-pipe), which included achieving a perfect 100 in 2012. Additionally, White became the first athlete to medal at both Summer and Winter X Games, as he also won titles in 2007 and 2011 in vert Skateboarding. He competed across five Winter Olympics (2006-2022), where he became the first snowboarder to win three Olympic gold medals. He accomplished this feat in the men's half-pipe in 2006, 2010 and 2018. Retired after a fourth-place finish in Beijing 2022, White has left a legacy for a whole new generation of snowboarders, earning a place at the Totallympics Hall of Fame. @JoshMartini007

  20. Brian McKeever CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING As far as the Paralympic competitions go, isn't that unusual to see an athlete completely dominating their field, but to keep the level of excellence for two decades is for very few. Canadian cross-country legend Brian McKeever certainly will be remembered among the most dominant names ever to compete at the Winter Paralympics. Starting in Salt Lake 2002 (where he also competed in Biathlon), McKeever went on to win 16 gold medals in his career (20 total), sweeping the three events for visually impaired in four consecutive Paralympics (2010-2022). With his results, he tied the all-time record for most victories by a male at the Winter Games. His achievements, especially at the 2010 home Games, raised the profile of the Winter Paralympics in Canada, proving that his legacy will live on for generations to come. @vinipereira

  22. Absolutely! I don't think there is one place on internet that's best for everything (for example for me, the main Dutch forum is better for something like darts or F1 simply because during the events it often goes in a pace of several posts per minute), but Totallympics definitely is by far the best overall place in terms of following a wide variety of sports all over the world (to mention the Dutch forum again, no way you'd get people there talking about luge or Nordic combined or a whole variety of other sports which are definitely at least kind of active here!). There's a reason Totallympics is basically one of only two sites I definitely always have as an open tab

  24. And that's only half of how incredible her career is, she is also a 7-time world allround champion (plus five more medals, tying the all-time record of 12 medals in an event in which one can only win one medal per year) and an incredible 15-time single distance world champion (although personally I'd say the allround golds mean more). Truly legendary athlete.

  27. Sebastian Vettel AUTO RACING Competing in Formula One since 2007, Sebastian Vettel is one of the most successful drivers in history and also the youngest world champion. He won headlines for his win at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix, and was quickly promoted to Red Bull. While he would lose in 2009 to the infamous BGP 001, he would become world champion in a tightly-fought 2010 season, and dominated in 2011. In 2012, he would have another close win, but 2013 was his most dominant season yet, winning the final nine races in a row to claim a fourth consecutive crown. He switched blue for Ferrari red in 2015, but couldn't repeat the feat in an era of Mercedes dominance, losing two tight battles to Lewis Hamilton in 2017 and 2018. While his last years weren't as triumphant as before, the 2010-13 period more than earns him a well-deserved spot in our Hall of Fame. @Mkbw50

  34. Some special thanks to @Sindo for supporting the return of the awards, even when I thought it wouldn't be successful. To the members who helped me with projects for the awards: @Dragon @Games and Rings @intoronto @JoshMartini007 @Mkbw50 @Olympian1010 @Vojthas. And of course to all the 38 of you who voted (list here) or followed the awards As I followed the same format of the previous editions (which were almost a decade before), I'm aware that some things need to change. Hopefully, by the end of this year we'll have more time to discuss all the suggestions made here in order to improve our awards.

  36. People don't care about the nations league, as many teams don't send their best. No shade, but it's funny that Canada win so many medals here but not gold - and also had a 4th place. Seems familiar

  37. lol how on earth does Serbia win the women's category, they didn't even win gold at the nations league (the other major event in 2022). While Canada's hockey team won gold at the Olympics AND World Championships, the only team in history to do that.
