Karate Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Douglas Broose :BRA won the national selection at -75kg category. So, if he does not overtake Vinicius in Olympic ranking at -63kg, he will be the Brazilian representant at -75kg Olympic qualifying event.

smart move...

even if I don't know how much that's gonna pay...I mean, going from 60kg to 75kg changes a lot of things on the international scene...:mumble:

WKF is really quick in updating rankings ! we have some major changes after the African champs. the Egyptian guy at 67kg won silver medal but he lost 300pts because he didn't defend his gold medal from 2019, therefore he is tied with Figueira on pts and the Brazilian will be higher because of his better result at the World Champs. of course this is just for now. they still have 3 more events left.

this is the list of virtually qualified athletes by now. El-Sawy still receives the African quota but that causes some other changes in the list. but keep in mind even if the deadline was today those additional athletes (continental quotas) are not guaranteed a spot because it's possible to see some changes in the list after the last chance qualifier mostly because of max 2 quotas per event rule. for example if El-Sawy qualifies directly from the Paris tournament, the African quota goes to another Egyptian athlete at 75kg and that means the Kazakh guy can't grab the Asian quota at 75kg.

WKF is extremely quick in updating the ranking :hyper:

I made some calculations, this is the list of athletes with realistic chance (even small chance) to qualify directly to the Olympics. I removed points from 2019 European Championships which will be replaced by 2020 results. that's why this ranking is a bit different than WKF

athletes in bold are 100% qualified and keep in mind European athletes have 1 more chance the rest. which means they can gain something around 3000pts in remaining events.

Men's Kata

:ESP Damian Quintero - 8737.5 Q

:TUR Ali Sofuoglu - 5512.5 Q

:VEN Antonio Diaz - 5055 Q

:ITA Mattia Busato - 3870

:TUR Eray Samdan - 6772.5

Men's 67kg

:FRA Steven Dacosta - 7950 Q

:BRA Vinicius Figueira - 6622.5

:EGY Ali El-Sawy - 5902.5

:CRO Ivan Kvesic - 5767.5

:KAZ Daniyar Yuldashev - 4537.5

:UKR Valerii Chobotar - 4065

Men's +84kg

:GEO Gogita Arkania - 6060

:TUR Alparsalan Yamanoglu - 4162.5

:FRA Dnylson Jacquet - 3487.5

:FRA Mehdi Filali - 3390

* The situation between Poursheib/Ganjzadeh makes the combined +75kg qualification is a bit complicated for everybody, Poursheib is guaranteed a top 2 finish which will guarantee Iran a spot but not for himself because of Ganjzadeh. right now Poursheib has more points but WKF shows Ganjzadeh in green ! because he is #1 in his weight and Poursheib is #2 (with Aktas still having his 2019 Euro points) still I'm not sure what will be the main criteria in this case for 2 athletes from the same country. 1) number of points or 2) rank in the category. right now I assume it's number 2.

I am new to catch up this sport, so I don't quite understand why there is one more Europe championships for European athletes. Isn't it unfair for athletes from other continents? Won't they object it?

this is not "one more" , only one of them will be counted into the ranking. right now they are counting 2019 Euro but after the end of 2020 Euro, they replace those points with 2020 results. at the end only one of them will be counted. what I did here is I just removed those 2019 points .

but yes other continents can protest about the fact that why European Championships is the last event !? that's not fair because European athletes know exactly what they need to qualify. that's not fair, the last tournament should be a worldwide one.

if that WKF document we did write a lot about in the past months has still some value, then final rank in their respective class has priority over the number of points (which is the following tie-breaker if both end up in the same spot in their class)...:mumble:

yes it seems so, in the new ranking, they show Ganjzadeh in green so obviously the final rank in the weight class has the advantage. that means Aktas and Horne also will play a big role in this battle between our guys.

it's also very important for Kvesic and Arkania, I think both of them most probably will finish 3rd in their classes, it will be up to the Iranians to decide about them :d
