At the very least it's something that should be addressed going forward - Tennis for example allows players who went on pregnancy leave to enter tournaments (including the Olympics) based on their previous ranking. If you are going to have a world ranking that is used as the main / only way to qualify for major events it really has to be able to take things like injuries and pregnancy leave into account.

To be fair, the rankings originally had no barring on the qualification. The cancellation of the Pan America and World qualifiers caused this. Though the original reason as to why the World qualifiers were cancelled was because the European qualifiers were going to be delayed.

In hindsight they should have cancelled the European qualifiers which haven't been completed and ran the World qualifiers. It would at least give athletes who were injured/pregnant in 2018/2019 a chance to qualify along with athletes who simply became better relative to what they were two years ago.

I mean the whole thing has been sort of a joke from top to bottom anyway, pandemic or not.

I will say that given the results we have seen at the qualifiers that have been held the BTF’s world ranking is, to be charitable, bad.
