Equestrian Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Recommended Posts

Looks like they changed the qualification system of eventing... Instead of awarding a team quota to the highest finisher of the Nations Cup final, they will award it to the highest finisher of the overall Nations Cup standings.

This just guarantees a qualification for Sweden or Italy, in case they miss out during European Championships... Really unfair for smaller teams like Belgium.

  • 1 month later...

FEI finally updated the dressage qualification system and Australia is now given their rightful place.

Also, the venues and dates for all remaining direct qualifiers should be decided by November 20 at the General Assembly.

Additionally, the new Olympic formats for dressage and jumping will be officially tested at the Hagen CSIOY/CDIOY in June of 2019.

What are the changes??

Dressage will use the heat system for Grand Prix (6 groups of 10 athletes; top 8 teams advance to team finals; best 2 from each group + 6 lucky losers to individual final). Team Final will be based solely on Grand Prix Special results, so it will be a lot like team gymnastics final with 8 teams all starting from 0.

As for jumping, individual competition will now be held before team competition. There will be only two individual rounds + (probably huge) jump-off for individual medals. Team competition will also have two rounds, with top 10 (out of 20) teams qualifying for the second one, and scores starting from 0...

Full regulations are available here... https://inside.fei.org/system/files/Olympic Regulations Tokyo2020 Equestrian 5.7.18 X Final version NFs 9July.pdf

FEI Olympic Group qualification events

The FEI Board (formerly Bureau) agreed that allocation of the Group C Jumping and Dressage qualifiers would be postponed due to transport issues for horses to access the proposed locations in Budapest (HUN) and Moscow (RUS).

The proposal is for a decision to be taken during the Board teleconference on 19 December following further evaluation on the health requirements from the Olympic Group C nations and recommendations based on a thorough review of both venues by the FEI Veterinary Director and the relevant Discipline Directors.

The Jumping qualifier for Group F was allocated to Rabat (MAR) in October 2019. The Group G Jumping qualifier will be in Valkenswaard (NED), following a proposal from the regional group.

The Dressage Committee will identify an event in Europe that can host a Dressage qualifier for Group F. There is no requirement for a Group G qualifier following Australia’s qualification at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ in Tryon 2018.

The Eventing qualifier for Group C will be held in Baborowko (POL) from 23-26 May 2019. As all Group F and G Eventing teams are based in Europe a qualifier will be identified to host a CCI 3* next spring in Europe. This will also be allocated on 19 December.

Eventing Nations Cup calendar for 2019:

:GBR Houghton Hall (May 23-26)

:ITA Pratoni del Vivaro (June 5-9)

:POL Strzegom (June 26-30)

:IRL Cappoquin (July 24-28)

:FRA Le Pin-au-Haras (August 7-13)

:BEL Waregem (September 19-22)

:NED Boekelo (October 10-13)

Highest placed not already qualified nation in season standings will qualify a team, meaning almost surely someone from Europe. It should have been the highest placed nation of the "Nations Cup Final" (meaning Boekelo stage), but that had to be changed because Boekelo stage is not officially called "Nations Cup Final". All thanks to FEI's carelessness while composing the qualification systems...

Do you know if this applies also to Jumping?

It's not. There is indeed such event as "Nations Cup Final" in jumping, so the quota allocation will be based solely on the results of that event. Of course, the nations will firstly need to qualify themselves for the Final during the various league qualifiers which will start in February/March.

  • 2 weeks later...

FEI :roflmao::bowdown:

I don't know how it's possible, but again they made a late change to qualification system (this time in dressage). And this time they can't even write it properly. They say that Groups D & E will be combined, BUT whoever corrected the document crossed Group C instead of E.

Haha...

Poor Bermuda, though I think she still qualifies, she just needs to actually earn her spot rather than just meet the minimum requirements.

At this point they should just combine the two groups, though in essence they pretty much already are with the exception of the individual eventing quotas.

    • Yeah. It was pretty bad that they cancel the contract with the original creative director after 7 months of work. I feel like politics, in this particular context of the changing of prime minister and the cabinet, may had caused changes in organizational decisions regarding the Sea Games including the direction of the opening ceremony.
    • That's what I figured.  Wouldn't be a proper lead up to an Olympics without some media-fueled fearmongering.
