I don't get what is the purpose of this? Was 8 matches in two weeks considered too much or something?

They say it's to make it more interesting and that teams have tougher time "picking" their opponents from other group. We did see some instances where no3 in the group in which USA isn't is essentialy better position than no2 in the same group, cause you avoid USA in the semis.

so Slovenia and Croatia?

Most likely, unless some top team in Europe really bombs the World Cup

Yes, 16 teams from the World Cup and 8 teams from the rankings (2 from each continent) will compete in four tournaments of six teams with the winner qualifying to the Olympics.

This qualification system isn’t much better than the FIVB’s in my opinion. It should be the top 4 from the World Cup. The best team from each of the five regions. The hosts. Then give us two Olympic qualification tournaments with the best ranked unqualified teams.

So, every team that made the Ro16 at the world cup is guaranteed a spot in one of the four final Olympic qualification tournament. In the end the top 23 or 24 teams (depending on where Japan finishes) will qualify.

However, based on FIBA ranking the following teams that aren’t currently guaranteed to qualify for the OQT based on their World Cup finish should qualify:

Africa:

1. :NGR Nigeria

2. :SEN Senegal

:ANG Angola and :TUN Tunisia should also be safe. :EGY Egypt, :CMR Cameroon and :MAR Morocco are on the bubble in that order.

Americas:

1. :MEX Mexico

2. :CAN Canada

Mexico cannot qualify through the World Cup. If Canada qualifies for the OQT through the World Cup their spot should go to :URU Uruguay. Other than whether Canada qualifies through the World Cup or the world ranking there is no drama here.

Asia / Oceania:

1. :IRI Iran

2. :CHN China

The :PHI Philippines and :KOR South Korea should also be safe. :NZL New Zealand, :JOR Jordan, :LBN Lebanon and :TPE Taiwan are on the bubble, in that order.

Europe:

1. :SLO Slovenia

2. :CRO Croatia

This one is actually pretty secure since neither Slovenia nor Croatia can qualify for the OQT through the WC.

The above assumes no major shakeup in the relative world ranking of the teams that fail to make the top 16 at the World Cup.

Edit: this qualification system is terrible.

    • Yes, that's Haaland's cousin Braut Brunes. If he has a bad day Raków is usually scrapping for 1-0 victory unless they concede a goal. Ivi Lopez is the playmaker but he's not as sharp since an injury last season.   Lech & Jagiellonia are the two strongest clubs right now, Raków probably #3. I discount league surprises and of course Legia which is stuck in relegation zone
    • On transfermarkt, Raków is worth 42 million euros and Jagiellonia only 32, but it is known that this is only a theory. On paper, the most valuable clubs in Poland are Lech and Raków: €42 million each. Raków have a strong Norwegian attacker from what I can see on internet.
    • Fiorentina gets another  club Raków Czestochowa in R16     Raków manager Marek Papszun moved to Legia lately and the club is slightly less demanding than Jagiellonia IMO. They're unlikely to score more than 1-2 goals in a game even in our league but have a better defense.
