Marietta, USA

Women's Long Jump

:GBR Lorraine Ugen 6.94m

Amazing comeback, out-of-nowhere performance from Ugen - from nowhere to World class, medal contender in one jump.... some way to catch the Beast, though....

Yes. I should have said the shoes is the best case scenario

Some of the recent times have been absurd

Reminds me of the Boardman-Obree era in track cycling and the shiny-suit era in swimming, and I think it will end the same way - a harsh backlash. Technology has simply overtaken the federations ability to police it, there may well be an added pharmaceutical issue as drugs testing has fallen off a cliff (expect a LOT of post games doping pings as the in competition testing snags a few who misttime)  and after these games, I suspect, WA is going to come under pressure to address the supershoes - Athletics, more than most sports, relies on its legacy, and the capacity to compare across the eras...

Still some way off her 2018 PB of 7.05m though. She's always been inconsistent with the exception of major championships where she has pretty much always underperformed. GB has five jumpers with qualifiers of between 6.84 and 6.94m but I'm not expecting a medal from this event whoever is selected.

Lol ... no she isn’t anywhere close to being a medal contender (the same is true for all other British long jumpers). You can’t take any of those long jump performances in the US seriously. Malone jumped over 7 m there and then she was hopeless in the Florence Diamond League. I would be HUGELY surprised if Ugen would jump over 6.80 m at the Olympics. The only realistic medal chance for GB in a field event is women’s heptathlon and maybe women’s pole vault.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

Believe it or not, this is the first time someone from Guatemala will compete in a stadium event since Sydney 2000!

They are too saturated with road runners and walkers.

Vancouver, CAN Harry Jerome Classic

Men's 5000m :CAN Lucas Bruchet 13:12.56

Canada already has 3 qualified, but Matthew Hughes likely will not compete in this event in Tokyo.

I have a silly question, I have the impression that there will be a lot less wild cards in athletics, I hope I am wrong

They changed it. Now all universality spots have to count within the set quota (with priority over non-direct qualifiers).

Looks like this isn't the case for the men's 100m because in the official schedule there are 4 preliminary round heats, and then in Round 1 there will still be 7 heats (56 athletes). So the universality quotas in men's 100m won't affect those trying to qualify by ranking. This isn't the case for the women's 100m however which does not have a preliminary round and starts in Round 1 with 7 heats, same as men's round 1.
