Table Tennis ULTM Latin American Olympic Games Qualifier 2021

Recommended Posts

My predictions for Singles Draw One.

According to tournament's system, the winners of the semifinals will qualify, so I'll analize the draw in upper and lower halfs

Women Singles

Upper Half

Melanie Díaz :PUR is top seed in the tournament, and should be the clear favorite as the draw favored her and should not have any problems to reach the decissive match. However, she's not even half as good as her sister and as such, could falter in that step.

But who could beat her? My pick for an upset comes not only from :CHI Daniela Ortega, who on paper is her main rival but lost the latest match between her and the "boricua", but from one of the potential dark horses: :CUB Daniela Fonseca.

Pick:CHI Ortega or :CUB Fonseca over :PUR Diaz.

Lower Half

Paulina Vega :CHI is the main contender here, but before she reaches the final match she will have to overcome either :COL Paula Medina or :DOM Eva Brito. While she has won over the later, the former has a more balanced record in their direct duels, and even the Colombian is not atop her game, an upset is possible.

Vega's rival for the Olympic quota will be more of an enigma, but the Chilean player should benefit from any of her possible challengers having to give it all to reach the final match. However, veteran :MEX Yadira Silva hasn't lost a match against any other women in this part of the draw (except Vega, yet Silva leads their direct duels 8-2), and should book her 4th ticket for the Olympics.

Pick: :MEX Silva  over :CHI Vega.

Men Singles

Upper Half

:PAR's Marcelo Aguirre is poised to be one of the four qualifiers, as he's currently the best ranked non Brazilian player in the region. However, in his path he'll likely meet two veterans, Cuban Jorge Campos & Argentina's Gaston Alto, both of whom have parity in their direct encounters with Aguirre.

Aguirre's rival for the Olympic ticket will be either :MEX Madrid or :PUR Afanador, in one of the greatest rivalries in the Central American & Caribbean region, with the former winning the last direct match between them and in better shape as of this rather short season.

Pick: :PAR Aguirre over :PUR Afanador.

Lower Half

This side will have :ARG Horacio Cifuentes as the main rival. Like Melanie Diaz, he really doesn't have any real threat in his way to the decissive match, unless Cuban Andy Pereira could provide another shocker, although that is very unlikely

However he should consider that very much like him, :ECU Alberto Miño will hardly be tested by his rivals, and not only the late has an overall 5-1 advantage over the former, but

Pick: :ECU Miño over :ARG Cifuentes.

What makes you so sure Guyana will get the spot?

The three highest ranked tripartite nations are

Men :TOG:VAN:COD

Women :VAN:SRI:COD

Well, they sent a full team here and seem to have a presence in table tennis in general.

Just sending a Tripartite request should be enough, as they are hardly active in any other Tripartite sport (except maybe boxing, but not to an extent of sending full teams to qualifiers).

:PAR Aguire, men's singles top seed has lost.

He'll have a second chance in the second tournament, but he'll have a less favourable bracket position.

That's because Sri Lanka by far has the highest participant rate of all tripartite nations. They have so far attempted to qualify in 100 events while second place among tripartite nations are Kuwait and Malta which are tied with 59 events each.

Well, Sri Lanka should finally qualify someone this month, once the CAS decision regarding Mathilda Karlsson comes through.

And their only other qualifier should be 3000m steeplechase women atm....everyone else competing would be wildcards
