How Many Medals do You Expect from Your Nation at the Winter Olympic Games 2018?

Recommended Posts

18-20

Cross Country : 0-2

Nordic Combined : 0-1

Ski Jumping: 0

Alpine Skiing: 2-3

Freestyle skiing: 4-5

Snowboarding: 2-3

Biathlon: 7

Figure skating: 1 (that's the easy one)

Speed Skating/Short Track : 0-1

Sliding sports: 0

The skiing federation (FIS + IBU disiciplines) is aiming at 20 medals for its disciplines. It's doable, but it sounds like the very upper limit.

You can potentially add some chances in all the sports (except speed skating) .. I don't think 20 is the upper limit with a bit of luck

I could also drop some chances here and there too. The point is to give a kind of realistic bracket for each sport/discipline.The FFS probably annonuced its objective too soon (before the season started actually).

18 is the number I'm personnaly looking for (allreay 3 more than our record in Sochi). Then, the more, the merrier :)

18 would be sufficient for the FFS with a bit of help from the FFSG :)

I am confident we will win somewhere in the region of 0-10 medals.

That's pessimistic projection, isn't it?

0-14 should be the realistic one.

I think it's very doubtful we will start in 14 events :d

Which makes me think of another question: which events do you think are the most likely to see a one-country podium? To be clear, mentioning an event doesn't mean you actually expect this to happen, just that in your opinion it's a bigger possibility than other events (for example I don't think men's 5000m will be swept by the Netherlands, but it's still 100% more likely than the women's 500m :p ).

Women's luge - Germany

Men's ski jumping (normal and large hill) - Germany/Norway

Nordic combined (both individual events) - Germany/Norway

Cross-country (several events) - Norway

This came to mind real quick :p

France in women's snowboardcross (and this is more than likely...actually, there are just 3/4 girls who could avoid it)...

Germany in men's Bobsleigh (mainly in 4-man, but I don't exclude the 2-man neither, if they can enter 3 sleds -I'm not 100% aware of qualifications criteria in Bobsleigh)

Russia (pardon, OAR) in women's single (Figure Skating)

South Korea in all 1000m and, even more, in all 1500m races in Short Track Speedskating (those last 2 being the most likely of the entire Games program)...

Moioli seemed very strong in last races (home effect ?) and Jacobellis is not to be underestimated ... but I will not lie, that would be my preference :p

    • Disappointing end of the race, wanted to see history this year
    • A lot of sports have been ruined with rule changes, modern pentathlon has actually better with these rules I think. I would never watch something span over 2 days. Short and quick finals is what most audience want.   Obviously can be optimised further, but this is definitely an excellent job and that's how a sport should be.
    • World Cup 1     Cairo, April 7-12       Women: Gold: Blanka Guzi - 1,488 pts (New World Record) Silver: Anastasiya Malashenoka  Bronze: Viyaleta Hureyeva    Men: Gold: Moutaz Mohamed  - 1,608 pts (New World Record) Silver: Mathis Rochat  Bronze: Mihaly Koleszar
    • Felt the athletes didn't give it their all in swimming, it was slow
    • China was not at the Olympics. You played Japan.   Taking any conculsions after 1 match is too early and premature. Norway is definitely by any mean not a punching bag, They are a team relegated from the Top division. Nobody is going to blown them. In the opposite China yes, they were piss poor today, totally harmless, this is not China from the pre and Beijing era, any naturalized player is not in the team anymore, only local girls who had issues even with normal skating and puck control, Was quite embarassing to watch this, but kudos to China they decided to go this harder way and reform their team with local players.   Italy is still the number one favorite for promotion, 3 points against Norway are the first and very important step. Your main games will still be Hungary and France as scripted.
    • Italy today beat Norway only 2-1 (and also was a draw in the all shots stats: 28- 26). It doesn't look good for us– our form has probably arrived in February, not now. In my opinion, Slovakia will be the favorite tomorrow – they won 7-0 against China today – and they'll probably were a peak of the form. Personally, I wasn't expecting Italy to advance and I think I was right – it's good that the minimum goal – no relegation – is almost certain. Certainly, today wasn't the same form as in February at the Olympics in the matches against France and China.
    • looking at the video and knowing Australia, I think the wind reading was wrong, it was surely a lot more windy than +1.7, but we all know that sometimes these things happen (you're so young, I don't know what you know about the 1988 Olympic Trials in Indianapolis and Florence Griffith Joyner records -still standing )
    • I call bullshit on the performances from this race    20.01 to 19.67 would be one thing, we all know how good Gout Gout has been hyped up to be, even though it feels like ridiculously impossible with how steep of an improvement it is… but almost everyone from the race has had ridiculous PB’s, I mean Murphy who’s a 20.41 guy at best is now 19.88. McHugh broke 21 seconds for the first time a month ago, and now he’s going 20.23.   Either an extremely fast track, wrong timing, favourable headwind, not sure what it is.
    • This also kind of showed, like last year, the biggest flaw of Pogacar: technique and bike control. The way he was wrestling himself through curve after curve where natural talents like Van Aert and Van der Poel (cyclocross greats, no coincidence) were flying through.
