Siddhartha Talukdar 125 Posted June 29, 2019 #8253 Share Posted June 29, 2019 The qualification for Fencing is that top 4 ranked teams are guaranteed qualification and then one team from each continent - Africa, Asia/Oceania, Americas and Europe if they are top in 16. If no continental team is in top 16 then it goes to best ranked team not qualified. Currently as per team rankings, France, Russia, Italy, USA take the automatic top 4 spots, South Korea from Asia, Canada from Americas, Ukraine from Europe. But things get interesting here. Since there's no African team in top 16 thier quota place goes to China who are ranked 6th. This helps the Indian cause because it frees up the individual quota. Asia/Oceania will get three individual quotas not qualified in team. So according to individual rankings, Hong Kong (rank - 39), Iran (rank - 62), India (rank - 65) might get the quotas. The closest competitors are Kazakhstan (rank - 75), Singapore (rank - 84)
Fly_like_a_don 938 Posted June 29, 2019 #8254 Share Posted June 29, 2019 Iran may not be a roadblock as Iran doesn't send its female athletes to many competitions (usually continental and world championships unless the sport is shooting, archery etc). Tunisia is good in women's fencing, hopefully they don't enter as African qualifying. They have got great infrastructure for fencing after Olympic bronze in Women's Foil in Rio.
