That would be so disappointing :yikes:

In my opinion, 50km classic mass start is the single 'highlight event' of the winter sports calendar

Well freestyle is far more popular and competitive nowadays.

I know, but that it's more popular doesn't mean it's automatically better. Anyone can easily learn freestyle, learning classic requires much more dedication, which makes it harder, but definitely increases the 'epicness' of the event (just like the marathon vs the 50km race walk).

Nah. It was a highlight when it was an interval start!

Although then for monobob I'd say there should be the same kind of criteria as for women's Nordic combined: first a good number of years with full World Cup competition so it's not still a new event/sport when added to the Olympics.

Without a doubt there needs to be a consistent world cup that develops the sport first.

Definitely not against classic (note: I proposed addition of an extra middle distance start, which favours classic in a way :)) What I think is that in order to be even more epic an event needs some heroes. How is the 50k champion supposed to defend his title when the style changes with the Olympiad? Having to wait for 8 years makes the event epic in terms of anticipation but takes out the charm of defending the title.

If I can compare marathon with race walking I would guess marathon is the mainstream, less technique, more attractive freestyle where race walking should be the technique demanding, few specialists event, where someone dominates before the race has even started :) 50K race walking is epic too but people tune in mainly for the marathon.

Exactly, which is why I'd say the 50k mass start should always be classic :d (well in fact it should change, but if it doesn't change, it should stay classic :p )

Ah yeah, how could I forget the country of Stybar and Simunek (the guy who was usually nowhere, but when the course was full of snow suddenly came and fought for the win, fantastic specialist) :d

- The biggest sports must prevail

- Because "we can" should not be a reason enough to include an event

    • Honestly, it’s not very clear what is happening in Italy — anything could happen. There is extremely high turnout, and no pollster, politician, or newspaper had predicted it; now they’re all there throwing out data. No one has any idea why people voted, also because it was very technical and almost empty polling stations were expected. It will be interesting to understand whether this is a protest vote against the government or a protest vote against the judiciary.
