Yeah...not only in European history though. Not at all.

By the way, when an alarming number of reactions to something like this are basically threats of violence, it does kinda make one think of a ban as a necessary evil. We shouldn't exactly go like "oh they're threatening with violence if they don't get their way, let's forget it".

And I'm sure lipstick & bikinis wouldn't fly in places like Yemen or Saudi Arabia but nobody calls this xenophobia

Ottoman Empire has tried to conquer Europe but thankfully failed in their plans.

Minority rule has never worked. The colonial empires have crumbled under it's own weight, likewise communism and then we had apartheid as well.

I believe you may be referring to baklava when you talk about the English word for the ski masks. I mean European countries are only passing these laws to ban burqas. If Christians wore full face coverings this would have never come about. Aren’t there some super religious Dutch groups that have women wear head coverings?  I just can’t wait for Islamic countries to start banning Christian things because this is definitely the route we should take as a planet towards globalization.

There is a big difference in head coverings and face coverings from security point of view. I think in the present ban, even Muslim women will be allowed to wear Abayas which are head coverings similar to bonnet that you talked about for super religious Dutch group.

Regarding Islamic countries, you should read about the rights that minorities have in these countries. How many countries that have more than 70% Muslim population are secular in nature? Also, majority of these Islamic countries would rant about such bans in Europe but are defending China while it is cracking down on Muslims in Xinjiang.

Maybe you can help me hear because I really thought a certain group I saw last year was Dutch. Here’s the story.

I was camping outside the Yosemite Portal (entrance). At our campground there are all types of tourists. There are a lot of French, Belgian, Dutch, German, and British tourists in the California mountains for some reason. Anyways, they are a few spots a campground reserved for big groups. So when I got back from fishing and took a walk around (because that is the best way to enjoy the magical California summer evenings) I saw this strange group. They looked Amish but spoke either German, French, Dutch, or some other Western European language. Their, what I believe to be, male escorts looked more Eastern European (or actually like the belonged to the mafia) and were always smoking and keeping a close eye on the girls. They did not like that I was curious (especially since one the girls was my age, and looked very nice). I’ve been trying to figure out what the hell I witnessed, but I haven’t been able to come up with a certain group yet. These are the people I was talking about wearing face coverings (though they were more like bonnets if that makes sense). This group almost looked Puritan to me.

Forgot to answer this, but no, it doesn't sound familiar...at all. It sounds more like a dangerous kind of cult that ends up in very unpleasant things. Seriously, that sounds shady as shit.

"They looked like they belonged to the mafia." Judging people by the way they look doesn't sound very...you :p

If Google is correct about abayas, yes :p

Our right-wing moron Geert Wilders has already come out today and said the next step is a headscarf ban. Much as I'm in favour of banning things that completely cover the face, I'm just as much against this 'headscarf ban' thing.

Classic stuff. When niqab or burqa is going to be banned for security measures, some will against it with the views of "hey, a secular state shouldn't interfere in religious stuff". But they often ignore the fact of non-religious face coverings which are also banned together too.

Yep. One thing that came to mind: when one sees someone with something face-covering in for example a public institution, employees have to warn this person and tell them to either take the face covering off or leave the premises. If not, police can be called in to do the same and - if someone refuses - give a fine. The problem though: how is police going to get identification from someone who refuses to take off their face covering? That's impossible..

The problem is when it's pretty clear that it's meant against the religious and other kinds are just putin there to make it seem more "neutral". That was the way things happened in Denmark, where we've had the law for a year. When right wing parties talked about it, they didn't even hide that it was meant against the muslims and some exceptions shows the same. Can't say if it is the same in the Netherlands, but here it was a more or less completely symbolic action against islam (especially considering how only very few wear the banned headwear)

    • https://www.gazzetta.it/Sport-Invernali/08-01-2025/biathlon-vittozzi-chiude-la-stagione-inutile-forzare-punto-ai-giochi.shtml   The case of Vittozzi's injury is very strange and I`m increasingly afraid of her form during the games. The press communication of the Italian federation was terrible all the time - the seriousness of Lisa's injury was constantly hidden and the problem was trivialized. Well, for us the biathlon season is basically over, in terms of hopes for the podium of the World Championships, World Cup etc. All that is left for us is to fight for 5th place in the Nations Cup and maintain 6 places in the World Cup for the next season.
    • Figure skater Aleksandr Korovin recently took his oath as a naturalised citizen of the Philippines. He will compete with Isabella Gamez in the pairs event at the upcoming Asian Winter Games.
    • Posted my votes.    For the first time our small country has an athlete, who without a doubt should deserve best athlete of the year award. Without being too "cocky", Armand Duplantis is the only real threat to Tadej Pogačar.
    • And not at all by decades of neglect of fire hazards by incompetent Marxist politicians, no sirreee bob.  Everyone knows it is wind that causes fires, which is why we get so many in the north of Scotland.
    • Southern California is currently experiencing one of the worst fire events in my lifetime caused by an extreme wind event
    • Still deciding, but NHL, NFL, NBA, club volleyball (as usual), Gim-Kim in some Korean Curling event, GSOC WFG Masters, Women’s U18 World Championships, and the Australian Open for sure, Junior FIS World Championships, BWF Malaysia Masters, big air/slopestyle freestyle skiing and snowboarding/alpine snowboarding, other winter sports (Luge/bobsleigh/skeleton/alpine skiing), Speed Skating European Championships   Water Polo WC and Men’s Handball World Championships I’ll be following along with scores.
    • Rams could well beat Vikings and this is a real coin toss. Sam Darnold's first playoff game and he looked bad vs Lions last weekend in the #1 seed decider already. This is one of these rare games when a wild card team has a much better record and the home team is the underdog on paper but Rams can pull this one off and it ends up being a "non-upset" upset.
    • For my predictions I’m assessing a number of factors into it. For example in the comeback category, I prioritize injuries/life or career threatening stuff over breaks. World Championships, World Cups (and similar stuff for sports that don’t have those) also factor into it.    BEST MALE ATHLETE for sportsmen in Olympic sports   #1:  Leon Marchand #2:  Armand Duplantis (3 WR’s in a year…) #3:  Teddy Riner   Odermatt not being nominated is unexpected.      BEST FEMALE ATHLETE for sportswomen in Olympic sports   #1:  Summer McIntosh #2:  Sifan Hassan #3:  Lisa Carrington     BEST NON-OLYMPIC ATHLETE for athletes in Non-Olympic sports and disciplines   #1:  Shohei Ohtani #2:  Patrick Mahomes #3:  Max Verstappen     BEST PARALYMPIC ATHLETE for athletes with a disability   #1: #2: #3:     BEST YOUTH ATHLETE for athletes up to 18 years old (born after January 1st, 2006) (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Summer McIntosh (again) #2:  Lamine Yamal #3:  Darja Varfolomeev     BEST MEN'S TEAM for national men's teams or groups (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  basketball team #2:  waterpolo team #3:  volleyball team     BEST WOMEN'S TEAM for national women's teams or groups (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  volleyball team #2:  handball team #3:  field hockey team   If I’m gonna be completely honest, after #1 and #2, I had a hard time choosing one because all four teams had their struggles…      BEST DOUBLES/PAIR OR MIXED TEAM for doubles and pairs or mixed teams and groups (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Caterina Banti/Tito Ruggeri #2:  David Åhman/Jonatan Hellvig #3:  Paul O’Donovan/Fintan McCarthy   I had to let out a laugh when I saw that  Duda/AP were nominated, because even though they won gold they were not on the same page at all through most of the season and went months on the Beach Pro Tour between May and July without a single medal      BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR for the most improved athlete (aged 19 or over) or national team (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Adriana Ruano #2:  Jasmine Paolini #3:  Shinnosuke Oka   Again, some of the nominations are confusing to me.  Vaast is surfing at his home break in Tahiti and like a lot of sports that advantage is big,  Lafond had a best jump of 14.90m in 2023 and  Alfred was a medal contender in 2023 as well.    I would put  Joan-Benjamin Gaba up there, he came into the Olympics completely out of the medal mix and he won silver and beat Hifumi by ippon in the mixed team final     COMEBACK OF THE YEAR for athletes or national teams who made a comeback performance in 2024 (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Sunisa Lee #2:  Paula Badosa #3:  Kristof Milak     SPORT MOMENT OF THE YEAR for any sport moment from 2024   #1:  Djokovic finally winning an Olympic gold medal in men’s singles tennis (and none of the other choices come close for me, honestly) #2:  Letsile Tebogo’s gold in the men’s 200m, first ever gold for Botswana and he also beats evil Lyles in the process  #3:  Armand Duplantis’ gold and WR in men’s pole vault   I wasn’t a fan the opening ceremony, and I thought the general consensus was that most people on here didn’t like it either, so I’m not sure on how it got nominated but…  Also thought there would be at least one non-Olympic nomination, but I guess not.   OLYMPIC SPIRIT AWARD for athletes or teams related to the 2024 Summer Olympics or Paralympics who exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship in the Games or showed great determination in overcoming obstacles   #1:  Kinzang Lhamo crossing the marathon finish line #2:  Fariba Hashimi fulfilling her Olympic dream, having to hide her practices from her parents and the Taliban for doing a “boys’ activity” #3: Same thing for  Manizha Talash, I can’t imagine how hard that must be for them…   Honestly, this was a tough category. Besides Skotheim, who I very clearly think is last… I feel like it could go in any order.
