Artistic Gymnastics at the Summer Olympic Games 2020

So the Balance Beam final will have 3 recently injured gymnasts (Black, Iordache, Saraiva) + Biles. I think China has this in the bag.

I learned never to trust the Chinese girls. If they hit, they will score BIG and win gold. But that's a big if when it comes to China.

Honestly you can probably pick any three athletes and have a chance to be right. The balance beam was already a huge wildcard, now add all of these outside factors into the picture and it'll be an interesting final..

My heart wants Saraiva, Black and Iordache on the beam podium, with Biles hitting the routine but not winning a medal (she already got one here, after all). Of course what my heart wants is not what we will get in this universe. Maybe in a different reality. :p

Iordache is out of beam finals. I'm heartbroken. This is not how artistic gymnastics at this OG was supposed to end. Really, really sad.

Well, we can see history being made once again today in a number of ways.

1) Canada might win a medal in women's artistic gymnastics for the first time. Canada has a gold medal in every other discipline at the Olympics: men's artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline.

2) Australia can win a medal in artistic gymnastics for the first time. The nation only has one silver medal in trampoline.

3) Kazakhstan could win its first ever medal in gymnastics. After a fourth place in rhythmic gymnastics in 2004, I've been rooting for Kazakhstan, but now is the first time in 17 years that it's actually possible to win a medal.

4) Turkey could also win its first ever medal in gymnastics. Along with Israel, Armenia and the Philippines, Turkey is part of the most recent wave of nations with great results in artistic gymnastics. In my opinion, Turkish gymnasts are the most talented of the bunch, but the finals have been very disappointing so far. This could change today.

5) If Pakhnyuk fails to win a medal today, chances are that Ukraine will end up not winning a medal in gymnastics for the first time since its independence. I know that rhythmic gymnastics will be contested soon, but Ukraine has slim chances at best  and only with the group. Still, it's merely a 1% chance. In reality, Pakhnyuk is their last realistic chance for a medal this year.

Oh, that was quick. 6 competitors still to go on parallel bars but we already know the gold medal is going to go to China. This score is just unbeatable.

Until Frazier’s score came in the BBC were saying all the time from the finish of his routine it would be at least close to a medal.

    • and after  we got the scalp of  in a World Cup warm-up match played in  Dubai    once again, it was a late surge with the bats, finishing with a 6 by Zain Ali at the very last ball (when we needed a 4 to tie and a 5 to win the match)    final score:  165/7 (20 overs),  167/7 (20 overs);  win by 3 wickets
    • China's medal prospects   Short Track Speed Skating: This is the event with the deepest emotional ties to China's winter sports, as China's first Olympic gold medal in winter sports came from this discipline. Unsurprisingly, people have high expectations for it in this Winter Olympics. Medal prospects are mainly focused on men's individual events and the two relay events. However, considering the strong strength of William Dandjinou, I think the probability of winning gold in men's individual events is very low. Instead, the main gold medal hopes lie in the men's relay and mixed relay. Medals: 1-3. My guess: 1 gold; Optimistic: 2 golds   Freestyle Skiing: The performance of this event is crucial to China's success in this Winter Olympics. Eileen Gu remains our super star and is highly competitive in slopestyle and halfpipe. As for the big air, if I remember correctly, she hasn't competed in this event since the Beijing Winter Olympics, so it's hard for me to make a clear judgment on her performance in this individual event. China has the potential to compete for medals or even gold in all three medal events of freestyle skiing aerials. However, given the unpredictability of aerials, the results could be either disastrous or brilliant. Xu Mengtao will compete in her fifth Winter Olympics. Medals: 3-6. My guess: 3 golds; Optimistic: 4 golds   Speed Skating: Similar to the situation in Beijing, the medal hopes still lie with Gao Tingyu and Ning Zhongyan. However, Stolz has shown extremely strong dominance during the Milan Olympic cycle, so I don't think there will be any gold medals in this event. Gao Tingyu has performed excellently in the previous two Winter Olympics, and I still believe he can win a medal in the 500m. Ning Zhongyan also has the potential to win medals in the 1000m and 1500m. Medals: 1-3. My guess: 0 gold; Optimistic: 0 gold   Snowboard: Like in Beijing, Su Yiming remains the star of China's snowboarding. He has maintained a very good competitive form this season, with great chances especially in the big air event, where he will aim to defend his title. He also has the potential to win a medal in slopestyle. Medals: 1-2. My guess: 1 gold; Optimistic: 1 gold   Skeleton: Men's events and mixed team events are opportunities to compete for medals, with Yin Zheng being the key athlete for medal contention. Medals: 1-2. My guess: 0 gold; Optimistic: 1 gold   Curling: China will send both men's and women's teams to this event. Both teams have the ability to compete with high-level strong teams. I predict that either the men's or women's team will reach the top four. Medals: 0-1. My guess: 0 golds; Optimistic: 0 golds   Ski Jumping: This is still a less developed event for China, but Zeng Ping has made significant progress this season, entering the top 8 in many high-level competitions. There is a chance to compete for a medal, but it will be very difficult to achieve. If it really happens, I think it will be quite incredible. Medals: 0-1   I think other events have no chance of winning medals.   summary, Optimistic: 8 golds and 17 medals;  My guess: 5 golds and 14 medals;  Worst-case scenario: 3 golds and 11 medals.
    • we're in Italy! calm down and relax...   everything necessary will appear when it will appear, possibly at least a few hours before the action starts (but don't get mad if it's a few days after the Games are underway)   pure Italian style
    • So tomorrow, the girls will made a protest prior to the mass start for the not-inclusion of Women Nordic Combined into the Olympics   I mean, yeah IOC and FIS have a point that the sport has so few medalled nations in the last decades, but in other hands they still keep in the olympics sports like Equestrian, diving or table tennis where even less nations medal for almost centuries now
    • I was just doing my prediction on the other thread, and then I calculated... I had 21 Gold, 8 Silver, 15 Bronze.  Probably a little too hopeful.   Oops!  (And I didn't even think I was being too optimistic as I was filling it out...guess so...)
    • This should be included in the Olympics soon. Every single event that’s added to the program is a positive thing.
