1968 US Olympian John Ferris has lost his battle with lung cancer, dying last weekend at the age of 71.

Ferris made his sole Olympic appearance at the 1968 Mexico City Games. At that event, Ferris took part in the first-ever 200 IM at an Olympic Games. There, he finished 3rd, securing a bronze medal with a time of 2:13.30. Joining him on the podium in 1968 were fellow Americans, Charlie Hickcox, with a 2:12.00 Olympic record, and Greg Buckingham with a 2:13.00.

He also picked up bronze in the 200 butterfly with a 2:09.30, behind American Carl Robbie (2:08.70) and Great Britain’s Martyn Woodroffe (2:09.00).

John Russell dies at age 100 shortly after becoming world's oldest living Olympic medallist

The world’s oldest living Olympic medallist, John Russell, has died, it has been announced.

The American, a bronze medallist in the team show jumping event at Helsinki 1952, passed away peacefully in San Antonio in Texas on September 30.

He was aged 100 years, seven months and 28 days old.

He is survived by his wife, Shane, his oldest son, John W. Russell, Jr. grandsons, William and McLean Russell, and his youngest son, Douglas E. Russell.

The oldest living Olympic medallist is now believed to be Germany’s Wilhelm Büsing, another equestrian competitor from Helsinki 1952.

Büsing, who turned 99 in March, won a silver medal in the team eventing event and bronze in the individual competition.

Fernando Lopes. Angola. Swimming. Age 55.

Angolan Olympic Committee (COA) secretary general António Monteiro paid tribute to Fernando Lopes - the country's flagbearer at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games - who has died aged 55.

Lopes was a swimmer in the 100 metre and 200m backstroke events, but competed in the 4x100m medley relay at Moscow 1980 when he was 15-years-old.

He was the youngest member of the Angolan delegation at the Games and carried the country's flag during the Opening Ceremony.
