With the latest lockdown in Melbourne are the Australian people really going to be happy seeing a lot of athletes and officials flying. To Japan and then having to quarantine on return . Wouldn’t be shocked to Australia talking about withdrawing soon.

Yes, because if there's a serious lockdown, then at least they have something interesting to watch during the day.

Of course they will say this. The IOC will not be the one to pull the plug.

It's all up to Tokyo. They lose money either way, but which one is more preferrable is for the argument.

Sure. That's why aussies are contesting qualifying tournaments around the world. For example, just today the 3x3 OQT un Austria. It's only for cheating.

We're going to be hard-pressed to find a larger lose-lose situation in the world of sports indeed..

The Chef de Mission of Team Ireland was on radio this morning pointing out that the case levels in Japan are half what we have currently in Ireland yet we are opening up. She said the feedback they are getting from places where the Irish Team will have training camps in Japan is that there in are no issues with them hosting athletes etc.

Its election year in Japan so people need to bear that in mind. That said the IOC need to be doing more to reassure the Japanese people that every precaution is being taken. A good start is that the IOC themselves need to ensure that there are no junckets etc and that the bare minimum of officials attend.

Better suggestion, I think the thread could be closed because in the current circumstances this is not happening. Like someone might tell the games will be cancelled till July 23.

Yes you would.  You would be absolutely stunned if Australia talked about withdraw.  GTFOH with that kind of fear-mongering.

I respect Australia's response to COVID in order to contain the virus, but for crying out loud, let's keep perspective on just how much COVID is circulating around Victoria right now compared to locations in other countries.

    • I will do my best to organise a pairs competition also involving nations from the 4 teams that are eliminated in the first half of the team competition along with the lowest ranked individual nations at the halfway point (end of session 2) to form 8 pairs. Pairs will be balanced so that the highest ranked nation in the competition will be paired with the lowest ranked nation, second highest with the second lowest and so on. All of that will be based on the individual ranking at the halfway point.   This way every nation will have at least interest in some event until the end of the 3rd session.   I will probably base it closely on @mrv86‘s proposed rules, and have sprints every 3 rounds of votes. The pairs with most medals from those 3 rounds get the points along with an extra bonus for medal and points doubles.   I do only have 1 day to organise this now so I can’t promise anything though.

    • The two-woman quota is based upon the "combined" ranking. The 6 best monobob + 6 best 2-woman results are taken into account at the moment (7 once this week's WC race has been raced).  Weiszewski competed in Europe Cup yesterday in the monobob, finishing 2nd, which gave her 110 points. This was her 7th monobob race, so this result replaced her worst (80 points), helping her leapfrog Cernanska by 8 points. At this point I guess she's in a better spot, as she's got the same room for improvement in the two-woman today, while Cernanska probably won't compete that well in the WC.
