New Olympic Best for France. Why is it an OB and not an OR though, what's the difference

I believe it’s because conditions aren’t always the same, so there’s no records in rowing. They have “best times” instead.

Very strong finish from our Rower Abdelkhalek el banna who clinched 3rd place in the vary last 20m or something that was really interesting to watch , he qualified in a very fast heat also which's really good

I always felt he got robbed there, as the World Rowing themselves had a precedent at some Junior Worlds when a dead-heat result in shared medals.

And to think swimming and bobsleigh are only too happy to share as many medals as possible for their 30-60 seconds efforts...

I know the feeling. Well, at least he can return now and make a win even sweeter. It will be very demanding though.

How on earth did Egypt not get disqualified??

I also was shocked by this. I've never seen anything like that before in rowing!

My commentator said that unlike athletics, you're not disqualified for being in the wrong lane unless you actively impede someone else

As now we come across the world
To share these Games of old
Let all the flags of every land
In brotherhood unfold

Good start for our Stefanos Ntouskos, winning his heat. I've been saying that I think he can win a medal and I don't see why not. He was 4th at the European Championships (after having extra races that week because of the Olympic qualifiers while others were rested), and the bronze medalist from Poland didn't qualify for Tokyo. I would be very surprised if there are less than 5 Europeans in the Final A in that event also, so the European Championships seem to be a good indication. Still I think Zeidler Nielsen and Borch are the favourites for the podium.

Surprised that Anneta Kyridou was third in her heat and not second. At least she advanced though.

    • There will be specialized double sculls...just not for an NOC if it is entering singles specialists.   Either enter 2 singles specialists, or 1 XD specialist pair.   But they can in theory compete in both events, I guess, if they qualify...our top M, I think, does both.   But there are 17M, 17W, and 30 Pairs allotted in the quota, so I don't think the intent is that every singles entry will be in doubles.   (Perhaps this gets to fall in line with Weightlifting, where due to max entry quota, an NOC can't enter in every event, even if they have the best athletes...here, unless you have a pair who qualifies in both.)

    • I read the Olympic qualification documents for weightlifting. A country can have the opportunity to send a maximum of 4 athletes in one gender, but the conditions are very strict.
    • world champion Jessica Schilder opened her season up with 19.78 in France.
    • wait! what???   so, there won't be specialized double sculls, but those boats would have to feature 2 single specialists if a Nation wants to enter 2 proper singles M+W??? tell me I misread the expalaination...
    • Yeah, they do get broadcast pretty regularly.  I remember even back in Bode Miller's day they would show the training.
