From our medalists:

  • Ágatha and Barbara (Beach Volleyball) have announced they won't play together anymore (Barbara already has a new partner, it seems).
  • At least for now, Martine Grael/Kahena Kunze (Sailing) don't have plans for the next Olympics cycle and won't compete this season anymore.
  • I'm thinking Robson Conceição will probably move to professional Boxing just like our 2012 medalists.
  • From Judo, I'm thinking this was Rafael Silva's last Games, but I might be wrong. I just hope Mayra Aguiar doesn't move to MMA like rumours are saying.
  • Diego Hypólito (Gymnastics) says he will try to compete in 2020, but for how long he can keep being a valuable adition to the team competing in only 1 apparatus (same for Zanetti, but he's younger than Hypólito).

Overall, I think we will have a lot of new names medaling in 2020, many athletes even extended their careers just to compete at home, so we'll see huge changes in next cycle, especially in team sports (Women's Volleyball worries me the most, now that the "golden age" is over).

The artistic gymnastics program will change completely from 2020 on. Each team will be composed of 4 all-arounders and up to 2 extra gymnasts can try to qualify as specialists through the World Cup circuit. Hypólito and Zanetti could easily qualify as specialists, while the team could keep focus on four strong all-arounders. This even gives Daniele Hypólito a chance to qualify for her sixth Olympics, though I pray for the Gods she decides to retire before then.

Our best female gymnasts, Flávia and Rebeca, are the top 2 all-arounders of Brazil right now. Thais Fidélis and Fabiane Valentin are promising junior gymnasts, while Lorrane Santos and Julie Kim are young and talented gymnasts who could try to qualify as specialists. Overall, the chance will be very good to the women's team. I'm not so sure about the men's team, though. Mariano could drop all-around entirely and focus on floor, Ângelo Assumpção is a promising gymnast but he's not so good as an all-arounder, Barreto will probably not make it to 2020, and Sasaki will probably not be in his better shape. Besides Ângelo, the best promising gymnast for the future is Caio Souza (bronze medal at the 2015 Pan American Games), but we need more strong all-arounders if we want to qualify a full team again.

Yes, if there's a possibility, I'm sure Zanetti and Hypólito will try to qualify as "specialists". Probably won't win medals, but who knows. Even though we only won medals in the Men's side, the Women's team looks better for 2020 with the new names arriving.

Gold medals (5):

Canoeing (Isaquias Queiroz)
Beach Volleyball (Larissa França/Talita Antunes)
Boxing (Robson Conceição)
Football (Men's team)
Judo (Érika Miranda)
Sailing (Robert Scheidt)

Bronze medals (12):
Beach Volleyball (Ágatha Bednarczuk/Bárbara Seixas)
Boxing (Robenilson de Jesus)
Canoeing (Isaquias Queiroz/Erlon Souza)
Handball (Women's team)
Judo (Mayra Aguiar)
Judo (Sarah Menezes)
Judo (Victor Penalber)
Sailing (Fernanda Oliveira/Ana Barbachan)
Taekwondo (Iris Tang Sing)
Tennis (Bruno Soares/Marcelo Melo)
Volleyball (Women's team)
Wrestling (Aline Silva)

Looking back at my predictions, it didn't went so bad as I thought. I predicted 24 medals, we won 19, but more golds than I thought (7 vs. 5). Predicted 10 out of 19 medals, which was kinda bad. Correctly predicted the color of 5 medals (Alison Cerutti/Bruno Schmidt, Martine Grael/Kahena Kunze, Men's Volleyball, Isaquias Queiroz, Mayra Aguiar), which also wasn't great.

I predicted some "bold" things like a gold for our Men's Volleyball team + not even a final for the Women's team (predicted bronze, which would be much better than the 5th place we got). Also predicted Women's Beach Volleyball losing in the final, although it was the wrong pair.

We lost four medals that we had thought it would be impossible to lose: Women's Pole Vault, Women's Handball, Women's Judo (Érika Miranda) and Women's indoor Volleyball. As the Games progressed, we lost huge opportunities in Women's Football, Women's Artistic Gymnastics (two medals) and a bronze medal in Women's Beach Volleyball. Brazilian women had a bad year overall. Only Rafaela and Martine/Kahena were able to get a gold medal. Disappointing.

Yes, things were pretty bad in the Women's side, especially in team sports.

For the Men's teams, no complaints. It's crazy that we won the trio "Football + Beach Volleyball + Volleyball", as opposed to only 1 silver medal (Beach Volleyball) in Women's.

    • Off-topic, when I lived in Beijing there was a park across the street that had all the 2022 pictograms along its fence on the street. They were big and lit up at night. It was really cool, especially because the 2022 pictograms were very unique and creative.
    • They're not very creative or unique to Italy/Milano, but like others have said, at least they're understandable unlike Paris. These are very generic, though.
    • National law and sport rules are completely different. Like, there's a law in Canada that if you punch someone in the face you will get charged with battery. But if you're playing hockey and do it, you'll only get 5 minutes in a penalty box. Japan only recognizes gender at birth and this was not an issue in 2020(1).    Any law Trump and the Republicans pass can only apply to governmental organizations, i.e. school competitions. Private sport events, like the NHL, MLB and the Olympics, can still decided who can and cannot participate in what events. If the NHL wants a female goaltender to play, they can do that tomorrow if they want. If the IOC decides Semenya can participate in the female category, then that's their right as a private entity. I'm sure Hitler wasn't happy that Jews, black people and other groups were allowed to participate in 1936, either.    Of course, I've been saying for a long time they should do away with "male" and "female" categories and just have "Over/Under X amount of testosterone" categories.
    • Yeah, if they have all their FTA* live streams on one page, announced in advance, life will be easier. Before you had to sub to about 7 or 8 YT channels to.know what was on every week.   But the results/events Page is also easier, because previously they used to mix up World Cup & say, Balkan Cup events together.
    • UWW's new rules for change of nationality   this doesn't look great for likes of Bahrain, Albania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Serbia and few more.    still it won't make a huge huge impact for the next Olympic cycle because each NOC still can use 2 mercenaries per style in each tournament but after 2028 it will be reduced to just 1.    some of those countries already have 3 or 4 (or more) Russian mercenaries per style. from now on they have to pick 2 of them for each tournament. I assumed the new rule applies to previous mercenaries too . https://cdn.uww.org/2024-11/change_of_nationality_regulation_eng_oct2024_final.pdf also you can't wrestle for another country without a passport. (UWW allowed that for some years) current non-national wrestlers can continue like that until the end of 2026 though.   it could be better but in general I'm OK with new rules. good job by UWW.
