Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022 News

On one hand, it would be great to see another competitive team at the games instead of China. On the other hand, I would love nothing more than to see Canada destroy the crap out of them :p

That would be a dick move, to be fair. Decide this 1 year or more before the Olympics or don't decide it, but not when the Olympics are right around the corner. Plus, 'based on the result', how exactly is that going to be determined? Will there be a set value of scores they have to stay within or will it be a matter of some expert saying "Hmm yeah...no....yeah alright"?

Hmm.. I wonder if this decision was influenced by NHL approving return of their players to WOG? I mean IOC could be fine with China playing against non-NHL rosters but now that the best guys are set to come, this could get ugly.

Ice hockey is not like soccer or volleyball. There is a risk of physical injury when hugely mismatched teams play, not just embarrassing scores.

Beijing committee released latest COVID-19 requirement.

1. All people entering China should be fully vaccinated by any kind of vaccine authorized by WHO or local authorities. If not should be quarantined by 21 days unless providing medical exemption proof.

2. No Spectators from abroad. Only local spectators meeting some requirements allowed. The requirements are not clear yet.

3. All people inside bubble should be conducted Covid-19 nucleic acid test daily.

the rest should be similar to Tokyo.

Be interesting to see if any NOC’s withdraw over mandatory vaccines. They are a few countries with enough hardline anti vaxers to make it somewhat awkward for their NOC to agree with it through most are hot weather countries not to be missed if there don’t compete.

Unless the problem is not enough vaccines for the affected country (in this case IOC should provide the neccessary vaccines free of charge for the athletes concerned) I dont see this as a problem. International sport was always hard to separate from politics, so in some cases accomodation should be made based on political consideration. But in case of antivaxxers, no such accommodation is neccessary, or indeed defensible.

The same way no international sports body takes the view of flat earthers into account. (The only defensible case is medical contraindication of the vaccine, and this is already provided for in the organizers' policy - see comment above)

Is the Sputnik-V authorized by Chinese authorities? B/c I know there is no WHO authorization (yet?). This has been a problem for those countries where this vaccine is in use (difficulty to travel abroad as it is unrecognized by many states, absent WHO authorization)
