Mass start is cool because a decent number of nations could actually qualify for Olympics. :DEN:SUI:BLR:GBR:COL are all provisionally qualified after the first stage, and yet none of them competed in Sochi.

But apart from that, mass start is just stupid.

Colombia doesn't need the mass start, Causil will qualify in the 500m :p

GBR qualified provisionally without making the final? That's odd.

Still, in the end an event needs to be good too and this is just way too short. It might be fun if it's 50+ laps and those crappy points are taken away.

Those who just missed the cut in semis received a couple of WC points.

Zapata is the Colombian in mass start though. Along with the alpine skier they can break their record number of athletes by 200%. :p

The boring and wrost format is the only one where we are good :p Great 3rd place for Lollobrigida

well, Francesca would be even better if those idiots of the ISU and IOC adopted the Dutch Marathon Cup format...the races would be a billion times more exciting (and fair to the better athletes)...

when they skate in the traditional 400m ovals, they normally make 80 laps (32km)...and of course there are no silly (and senseless) intermediate sprints...

p.s. the boys usually skate over 125 laps (50km)

Not that random, mostly a matter of 'Dubreuil shouldn't have been in the B division based on pure quality' :p

But yeah, apart from that, this is yet another reason why it's absolutely insane that they changed the Olympic 500m to one heat. Apart from things being so close, that's nothing less than 'falsifying' the competition, since there's always one skater that has an advantage by having the last outside turn. That was eliminated by the normal system of two 500m races, but apparently a fair competition is not what the IOC/ISU wants.

The US federation had a really good proposal for sprints. They wanted both the 500m and the 1000m to be contested over a two run, best time counts (similar to half pipe / slopestyle) with one try on the inner and one try on the outer. Obviously the ISU went the other way, but I actually prefer that idea to the two run format.

The 500m especially is just too high variance for a one run format at the godamn Olympics. There are like 15 people who can win on a given day.

For the 500m I might agree, not for the 1000m. Although I'd still just prefer the 500m to still be a two race event, where both count. At least the 'one race counts' suggestion is still fair, unlike the one we'll have in Pyeongchang now.

At least it's going to be fair on the women's side because Kodaira is going to win regardless of the format :p

Men's race is going to be a lottery.

Chung Jae-won takes over 5 seconds off of his PB and puts down a 6.20 5k in the B-division, finishing with a couple of 29-second laps...which is alright, but which becomes a whole lot more than alright when considering he's only 16 :yikes::hyper:

That's only a bit less than two seconds slower than Bokko's world junior record..
