One hour to go until the Dutch single distance champs get underway, this is gonna be fun if the insane times in pre-season are any indication :p

World champion Kjeld Nuis finishes 6th in the 1500m and misses out on the World Cups. Koen Verweij came back from training in Russia and took the win with a big margin.

quite surprising results, I'd say...:yikes:

p.s. am I the only one who has some "unhortodox" thoughts about Verweij's "hidden" training "over there"?

No :p

Erben Wennemars (former top class sprinter and nowadays analyst on Dutch TV) has been rather furious about Verweij going to Russia. Nuis judged him for it, but well, Nuis is 6th and Verweij won, so yeah :d

I laughed at the interviewer's question after the win: "Did you do anything different there?"

Thijsje Oenema has been spotted in Heerenveen, watching the races. Very good news, since she retired because of rather serious cancer which definitely wasn't sure if it could be cured. She looked pretty healthy :) (don't know if she actually is, but it was good to see her there)

this looks some good news...

I really hope she's on her full recovery path...

p.s. they also showed Marianne Timmer on the stands...nowadays she looks even more beautiful than in her racing times...

    • There will be specialized double sculls...just not for an NOC if it is entering singles specialists.   Either enter 2 singles specialists, or 1 XD specialist pair.   But they can in theory compete in both events, I guess, if they qualify...our top M, I think, does both.   But there are 17M, 17W, and 30 Pairs allotted in the quota, so I don't think the intent is that every singles entry will be in doubles.   (Perhaps this gets to fall in line with Weightlifting, where due to max entry quota, an NOC can't enter in every event, even if they have the best athletes...here, unless you have a pair who qualifies in both.)

    • I read the Olympic qualification documents for weightlifting. A country can have the opportunity to send a maximum of 4 athletes in one gender, but the conditions are very strict.
    • world champion Jessica Schilder opened her season up with 19.78 in France.
    • wait! what???   so, there won't be specialized double sculls, but those boats would have to feature 2 single specialists if a Nation wants to enter 2 proper singles M+W??? tell me I misread the expalaination...
    • Yeah, they do get broadcast pretty regularly.  I remember even back in Bode Miller's day they would show the training.
