A big step forward by the Swedish skiers, but still far from what was expected before the Championships, especially from Calle.

Johan did fine, and I really hope he'll do the relay and feel ready to go for the Olympics in a year.

Lasse seems to do fine, though pretty far from the Olympic standard, and Tue a bit better than expected so far.

And also for GB as well, 4 athletes in the top 70 is brilliant and our second best ever finish that I can find in 12th place, only beaten by 11th in the Skiathlon a couple of days ago!!

How can swimming have four different styles while XC skiing can't even have two for the interval starts at least...

Niskanen golden in 15 km classic at Lahti 2017

 

At the age of twenty-two Finland's Iivo Niskanen was already an Olympic Champion in the team sprint at the Sochi Games.  

 

Now at the age of 25, he is World Champion in the 15 km classic in Lahti, Finland.  Norway's Martin Johnsrud Sundby started 6 bibs behind Niskanen but never led him at any split points.  The closest they were all day was 0.5 seconds at the 1.5 km mark. By the 9.5 km mark Niskanen had increased his lead to 25.3 seconds but at the finish it shrunk down to 17.9 seconds but remained a clear victory for Niskanen.  

 

Sundby took his second silver medal of the Championships and was joined on the podium by his teammate Niklas Dyrhaug for the bronze +31.3 seconds slower than Niskanen.

 

This was Dyrhaug's first individual World Championship medal to go along with a team gold in the relay from Falun two years ago. Dyrhaug trailed Russia's Alexander Bessmertnykh but a strong final few kilometer's secured him the bronze.  

 

In 5th place there was a tie between Norway's Didrik Toenseth and Russia's Andrey Larkov +53.2 seconds off the winning time.

I agree, the same is true for fencing team events, but XC shouldnt get more events, they should have 10 km free/classic (women) and 15 km free/classic (men) instead of the skiathlon, which doesnt make any sense in my opinion. Skiathlon is an endurance race where the best athlete in free skating wins (the classic part is just a warm up), so basically the same as the 30/50 km race.

Any medal for Sundby is a punch in the face of this sport and every clean athlete.
