And in the end Canada just edged Venezuela by one point... the seven quotas then go to the countries that @dcro said; meanwhile, Cuba and Mexico's places in individual rankings will go to Venezuela and Greece

I'm happy that Canada made it in, but this is one sport I really don't understand the qualification and how some competitors can fluctuate their performance so much.

Eligible nations (nations which did not qualify through the world championships) are ranked based on the results of each event, the top three athletes are given 28, 25 and 23 points respectively while the ranking continues in sequential numbers (22, 21, 20 etc). The top six male results or top four female results are summed together to create the ranking list. For the Pan American championships the top seven men's teams and the top four women's teams qualify one quota for that gender which can be used in any event.

Overall I think it is a poor system. While it gives weaker nations an opportunity to qualify it hurts middle-tier nations where they may have two decent athletes, but are not strong enough to qualify more than one quota. Plus you have the whole issue of dividing a maximum of six athletes into eight events for the men and four athletes into seven events for the women.

Who is the last individual place going to?

Jesus Gonzalez from Venezuela is ranked 17 at 105kg and Anatoly Mushyk from Israel is also ranked 17 at 94kg

Actually is Jesus Lopez Sanchez :VEN 14th at 62kg and Antonis Martasidis :GRE 15th at 85kg.

Depending on further reallocations, Israel is almost likely to qualify a lifter.

Big dopping related news that affects qualification. The IWF has updated the list of countries with quitas removed:

  • Azerbaijan - 1 m / 1 w
  • Belarus - 1 m
  • Kazakhastan - 1 m / 1 w
  • Moldova - 2 m
  • North Korea - 1 m / 1 w
  • Romanian- 1 m
  • Russia - 1 m / 1 w
  • Uzbekistan - 1 w

Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia all face a one year suspention of all the re-tests from 2008 and 2012 are confirmed, so they might miss the Olympics entirely like Bulgaria.

May the reallocations start! 13 quotas up for grabs.
