Wrestling Qualification for Summer Olympic Games 2016

Recommended Posts

I was thinking UWW also can solve this mess from another point of view. maybe they'll take the highest unqualified country from back at the Euro Qualifier where the crime took place

in this case David Safaryan (ARM) is the other bronze medalist who can qualify in place of UKR at 66

but for 120kg, they need two unqualified wrestlers while one of bronze medalists qualified later, in this case Iliev (BUL) will take one of the spots. Gagloev (SVK) and Arzoumanidis (GRE) both finished 5th, Gagloev has 1 classification point while the Greek has zero.

after all I don't think it makes sense to give those spots to bronze medalists from this last tournament ! that was European quota and European countries should get it but you never know, UWW can surprise everybody !

I think the only way IND and ROU get it is if UKR and BLR somehow get a clean chit...a bit unfortunate from an Indian point of view considering how our wrestler Hitender bossed both Iliev (pinned in under a minute) and Gagloev (defeated 5-0) in the repechage rounds...

Also, worth noting that UWW have not yet come out with their article summarizing the results and quotas of the day for the freestyle competition. Might be because of these doping issues...

Yes that's true if you ask me. by my understanding IND will qualify only if Ukrainian guy Zaseev comes clean.

You were right about the article, they finally published that without saying anything about 125kg qualifiers !

still you never can be sure with these guys. they can take any possible (or even impossible) decisions to surprise everybody !

UWW confirmed Adjustments to Olympic Qualifiers Announced (Doping issues)

United World Wrestling has redistributed Olympic qualifications for freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s wrestling. The changes come in response to recent doping violations for small concentrations of Meldonium at the European Olympic Qualification Tournament in Serbia and the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament in Kazakhstan.

According to UWW’s Anti-Doping Rules and the last instruction issued by WADA, the competitive results of the athletes sanctioned for doping violations will be wiped from their respective tournaments. Per the rules of the international federation, Olympic licenses will be redistributed based on the following circumstances:

Men's Freestyle 65 kg

Due to doping violations at the European Olympic Games Qualifier Magomedmurad GADZHIEV (POL) and Andriy KVYATKOVSKYY (UKR) have had their results at 65kg wiped and associated Olympic licenses revoked. The licenses were transferred to Georgia (via Zurabi IAKOBISHVILI) and Armenia (via Devid SAFARYAN).

Following this adjustment, Bulgaria (via Boris NOVACHKOV) earns the Olympic license won by Georgia at the 1st World OG Qualifier in Mongolia.

As Bulgaria takes their license from the 1st World OG Qualifier, their first-place finish at the 2nd World OG Qualifier will be transferred to the United States who finished in third place (via Frank MOLINARO).

The qualified countries at 65kg (for Zrenjanin, Ulaanbaatar and Istanbul) are then: Georgia (GEO), Armenia (ARM), Bahrain (BRN), Turkey (TUR), Bulgaria (BUL), Canada (CAN) and The United States of America (USA).

Men's Freestyle 125kg

At 125kg, Allen ZASIEIEV (UKR) and Yusup JALILAU (BLR) also had their results wiped and Olympic licenses revoked for positive doping results at the European OG Qualifier.  Their licenses were transferred to Bulgaria (via Lyuben ILIEV) and Hungary (via Daniel LIGETI).

Hungary placed at the 1st World OG Qualifier, and Bulgaria’s qualifying spot would have been the replacement but (as stated above) was earned in Serbia, giving the spot to Kyrgyzstan (via Aiaal LAZAREV).

The qualified countries at 125kg (for Zrenjanin, Ulaanbaatar and Istanbul) are then: Bulgaria (BUL), Hungary (HUN), China (CHN), Poland (POL), Kyrgyzstan (KGZ), Ukraine (UKR) and Belarus (BLR).

Greco-Roman 85kg
In Greco-Roman a positive doping result for Zhanarbek KENZHEEV (KGZ) at the Asian Olympic Qualifier shifted an 85kg Olympic license from Kyrgyzstan to India (via Ravinder KHATRI).

Women's Freestyle 53 kg

In women’s wrestling a positive doping result for Sumiya ERDENECHIMEG (MGL) at the Asian Olympic Qualifier shifted a 53kg Olympic license from Mongolia to India (via Kumari BABITA).

Women's Freestyle 53 kg
At 58kg a positive doping result for Oksana HERHEL (UKR) shifted the Ukrainian Olympic license to Moldova (via Mariana CHERDIVARA ESANU).

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
