It's a shame the ITT is only a world championships event since 1994, so it's hard to compare the time trialists throughout the years, but it's quite clear that Martin deserves a mention when trying to come up with the 5 (for example) best time trialists ever. If only it was possible to fairly compare riders from 60-70 years ago to those of today, but so far I would probably still go for the one and only Monsieur Chrono as the number one

I don't get that nickname. Panzers and armored cars are definitely not renowned for their speed. :p

It´s mainly because of his strength and his typical notion of riding which is mainly about power. Also one curiosity, he got this nickname when he was a policeman in Germany before his pro-cycling career. It´s actually funny and nothing extraordinary, because John Degenkolb another great German rider was a cop too :d

The locomotive was Martin, and he had just bolted out of the station. The 28-year-old German is known as “der Panzerwagen,” which literally translates to tank, but just as easily could stand for badass, and he proved yet again he has one of the most potent engines in the bunch.

Beautiful piece of work by the Germans, setting up a perfect sprint train for Norwegian Kristoffer Halvorsen to take the world title :d
