Fun Fact of the year !

Edit: but how is it even possible, there surely must be some equestrian, sailor, even fencer who have won a medal being older ? Or do you mean mean winter olympics only ?

WOG only ;)

I don't understand how people are saying Stoddard fell over and conclude as the only comment "oh it's a horrible day for. Very eurocentric take on this"

What about the Korean athletes who took 4 years to get here and got wiped out by her. Yes Korea is third but usually Koreans overtake their opponent in the last 3-4 laps. Korea is world ranked twice in this and got robbed off a medal.

This person fell over 3 times on her own because she can't control her speed. It can happen but if it is this often it is reckless and inconsiderate of the fact you are taking out others next to you.

It's part of the sport, you see it every meet. Korea isn't the first, and they won't be the last. In the famous race where Steven Bardbury won gold for Australia, the Canadian skater wasn't involved in the pushing and shoving at the front, but was taken out by them when they fell. You can't just go on reputation. Canada was favoured to win today, but they didn't even while completing the race cleanly. It's all part of the race, that's why it's a strategy to get to the front asap to avoid all this.

As I said in a previous post, I would be pissed if it was Canada, so I get it. But it's part of the sport. Koreans have gone down and taken out other innocent skaters in the past, too.

An amazing experience at the short track venue. I had hoped Canada would win gold, but the second best option happened (the home team winning).

And as I mentioned in the Canada forum, I got to meet the Canadian men's hockey team and I briefly chatted with Sidney Crosby.

I think he means winter only and women only.

I think the oldest ever, at least at the Winter OG, is Maurilio De Zolt, who was the first member of the 4x10 km cross-country relay that won gold in Lillehammer. He was nearly 44 years old.

is Fontana the only athlete in history to win medals in two home Olympics ?!

how many athlete even participated in two home Olympics, let alone winning medals :d

There is actually a precedent at the Winter Olympics: Bibi Torriani, a Swiss hockey player, won bronze in St. Moritz in 1928 and again in St. Moritz in 1948.

If we count the Summer Olympics as well, there are a few Americans who did it because Los Angeles and Atlanta hosted the Games just 12 years apart, in 1984 and 1996 (Carl Lewis and Jackie Joyner-Kersee in athletics and Karch Kiraly in volleyball/beach volleyball).

Lewis and Kiraly are the only ones who won gold in both editions.

The source for all of this is an Italian journalist named Massimiliano Ambesi, he's worth following if you're into these statistics.

Congrats! :yes I'm not jealous, I'm not jealous. I don't know if I've ever mentioned here before, but Sid is by far my favourite athlete ever (and I really mean it), and meeting him has been my life-long dream ever since I was a little boy, I've always admired the guy. The very first time I watched hockey was back at the Vancouver 2010 gold medal game, and while I was only 5, I still remember the game like it was yesterday. Not only did he inspire me to be the person that I am today, but he also inspired me to start playing hockey as well. Really lucky, I hope one day I'll get my chance to meet him as well :d

Yes to the rest but her falling three times today is probably an issue with her blades or skates. It’s uncharacteristic for her to fall that much.

As for the lack of advancement, :KOR got extremely unlucky and (by my understanding of the rules) the officials got it correct. Kind of hard to write that rule in balanced way sadly.
