in Italy 13 is considered a lucky number, it's 17 the nightmerish one

given our performance in today's events, maybe we should change that and align to the rest of the world

Probably after this competition in :KAZ 13th will be lucky number too

Shiffrin in slalom for sure

I think slalom is an inherently unpredictable race, so an upset there is 'less of an upset' than in other races, if that makes sense. DNFs are very frequent, the course and the slope can make a huge difference, the bib (or the starting order, more accurately, as it's mostly relevant in the 2nd run) can also be a factor.

Shiffrin, for instance, in spite of being clearly the greatest slalom skier of all time, has never won more than 7 in a row, I believe. Even at her best, she never managed to win all the slaloms in one season (she won every time she started in 2015/16, but she missed half the races because of an injury).

Now it'll probably be even harder to beat Norway in the cross country relay, because they have Klaebo. Back then, there were no sprint specialists, and even Daehli was beatable. Even in 2002, Zorzi came very close to beating Alsgaard in the relay race finish.

Good ol' Bradbury, because Shaidorov also was the only one that managed to not have a hard contact between the ice and his butt

I am unashamed, at getting nothing done.

Any idea what was the average betting odds for our good friend Mikhail Stanislavovich Shaidorov this evening or prior the race? Or could you even bet for him anywhere?

Even the simple yes/no bet for Malinin was going on on Kalshi (which is US only but would guess other betting sites or markets were similar) 93 cents vs 7 cents this evening (European time)

So 13+ times payout for simply betting that Malinin will not win

Uf.  Finally managed to watch the last few skaters.  That was painful (Malinin + all the others...).  Happy for Shaidorov :KAZ .  He had a great skate.  Now off to nurse some wounds...

(Can we get a reverse upset and have Campbell Wright pull off a biathlon medal?) :)

Copravolley's post had me thinking, what would be considered comparable to tonight's upset? Norway losing the men's relay or the men's team sprint in cross-country?

Jordan Stolz losing in the 1500m

I just woke up. It's surprising that Malinin lost:yikes::yikes::yikes:. Before the Olympics, I thought there was a 99% chance Malinin would win. I can only say that this is the charm of the Olympics.
