very, very happy for Greece (definitely my favourite team, when they don't play vs Italy), but let's be honest, if I were Australian, right now I'd be absolutely mad ;)

Agreed on being my fav team behind Netherlands and Spain, but Australia did that to themselves. Silly to concede an offensive foul like that with seconds to play. Similar situation befell the Dutch with a poor pass on the final possession but they were lucky Spain couldn't capitalize. They went out anyway, but still.

Spain has a limited number of players compared to other countries (top teams are located in Barcelona + Canoe in Madrid, but the team is way better in men's side), but the coaching level at club level is very high, especially for youth teams.

Not sure what it's like for us now but when I was a kid we hardly had any concrete youth teams for Water Polo, the only time most people in the aquatics sphere actually played Water Polo at youth club level was as a treat at the at of the last session before Christmas.

Was there no program created for the 2012 Olympics? In a sense, this was probably a missed opportunity for the UK, as it failed to improve its level in any team sport where it had previously been weak: such as volleyball, water polo or handball.

Not as far as I know of, tbh we've only been prominent since Post Tokyo but with the women's team looking good to qualify for LA hopefully there will be a programme set up in place for future games.

I think the way we work over here is if you do well without the support, you get the support so if the women can qualify I won't be surprised if we see us perform better across the board in years to come.

With 5 EU countries being more prominent it won't be easy to qualify, albeit possible because of the two extra spots.

the problem is that they didn't make any foul

that was just a pure robbery by the refs (as many others in this tournament)

meanwhile I was really surprised to see how dominating their performance was earlier Today against :USA

same with :HUN, I didn't really expect them to outclass :ESP like that

however, I don't like the new rules at all, generally speaking

Yea UK is just on the cusp there is a clear 11 teams better. If RSA randomly decides to use its quota, it would likely be the UK missing out.

Great Britain isn't that far off from the likes of New Zealand, Japan or even China. I can see them closing the gap with just a little bit of investment.

Of course, if Russia returns then things get a bit tougher.

    • Honestly, I think you guys have a much better chance of success here than we do. It's already difficult to maintain this sport, and with this ridiculous format this year, things have gotten even worse. Years and years participating in the elite and we haven't been able to evolve; it was just a waste.

    • Another weak result for our athletics team, which is typical; without Caio or Alisson, our chances of a medal in any high-level tournament are almost zero.   However, Juliana's result in the women's pole vault was a great 7th place. She is improving rapidly and still has a lot of room for growth.
