Iordache had no chance of getting a medal. Ponor will not get one either, but at least she will probably make it to the balance beam and floor finals.

OK :) Being Romanian, I probably know the Romanian gymnasts far less than you do...

If the lights light up exactly at the correct moment, he was definitely first, since his light went on first. Not sure if those lights are 100% accurate though?

I follow this sport quite closely for a number of years. One must only look at the videos from the Romanian nationals and the difference between Iordache and Ponor is clear. Iordache is not steady and has not taken part in any other competition in 2016 besides the Romanian nationals. She is not ready to compete. I wish Romania had other choices besides Ponor and Iordache, but Holbura, the third best gymnast at this point who is not injured, was not able to win a gold medal in an event with junior gymnasts, the Gymnasiade. What could she do at the Olympics? Not much, I guess.

And the fact that you are Romanian does not mean anything about how much you know about Iordache. I'm Brazilian, but don't ask me about football. I know nothing about this sport.

The fact I'm Romanian does mean that I have access to lots of competitions, papers, TV news and inner gossip that you don't have a clue about

And what can you do with this information other than coming here and stating that you know more than everybody? I'm looking for facts, and then maybe I could agree with you. After what I've SEEN, though, Ponor is the only female gymnast in Romania who could go to the Olympics without embarrassing herself and her country.

Athletes to look out for in Rio according to Dipa Karmakar:

Maria Paseka, Hong Un-Jong and Oksana Chusovitina ... :mumble:

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

Just to clarify, she is not saying these are main medal hopefuls but just her fellow competitors in Vault, more like her favourite athletes.

Nikita Ignatyev won't be in Russia team.  Ivan Stretovich is in.

Is that much of a change for the Russians? Honestly I know neither of them.

I saw ( if I understand it at all - my Russian is not good at all :d) that they had something like last big training and Stretovich was better.

If Stretovich really better Ignatiev, Russia will be able to compete for the gold in the team, not only for medals. And Stretovych will be a contender for the finals on uneven bars and horizontal bar. He was a month ago, won the Cup of Russia in these disciplines

    • need to work on the celebrations... or just drop them?   Btw, these jerseys suck and I remember Zambia playing in all white with red numbers. At least they have orange on national flag but still...
    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory

    • For me, these were very good Olympics, and British sport benefited greatly from them, and is still benefiting. I fear it will be much worse here. Canada also benefited very good on Vancouver 2010 – this is very good see in the medal standings of subsequent Winter Games after 2010 and earlier.
    • Nobody hates Britain more than the British media so… I recall it being quite a pessimistic tone before the London games started.
    • I'm curious what was written before London 2012? Did they attack their own country, or did they just keep quiet?

    • Very true point.  Although I think at this point everyone is just holding their collective breath until the test event.  The NHL isn't going to rage anymore until then because it's not like that would make the arena progress go any quicker
