That's too bad. Athletes who finish in the top 32 (or 36 for the 1590m) should be the priority over the 5th athlete from a relay country.

So Croatia loses their 2nd women's quota, Hong Kong loses their only women's quota and Poland loses their 3rd women's quota.

This means that Great Britain, Slovakia and Ukraine should fill up the rest of the 1500m field since they are the highest placed reserves that doesn't require an additional quota.

You are right! Obvious rule violation in quota.... In this case, woman spots got deleted because of the man. That is not possible if following the rules. Allocation of quota can start only after the quota is not filled in overall allowed number in specific gender (56; 57-1 leads to 56 in woman category)

Maybe they should but they clearly don't based on how the document is written, D.2.2 makes it clear that the fifth relay quota (for teams w/ 8 or more starting position) has pririty over individual quotas.

The fact that there is a gender imbalance in how the quotas are allocated is weird, but it does sort of make sense because of how D2.3 is written. Quotas are handed out in rotation, and it just so happens that if you go through the process the three missing quotas are all in the women's 1500m. It's a badly written document (like every single ISU Olympic qualification document always is >.> ) but I don't think there is another interpretation of it that could be valid. You award quotas in this order, going from 1st to 32nd (or 36th) in the ranking until you hid 112:

  • Men's 500m
  • Women's 500m
  • Women's 1000m
  • Men's 1000m
  • Men's 1500m
  • Women's 1500m

They would not have included both genders on the same rotation if the intent wasn't to allow an inbalance in gender quotas after completing D2.3.

I guess, it´s normal. If you look at it from the international federation view

Relay quotas goes usually to powerhouses of the sport, countries where the sport is popular, followed by TV viewers etc... means money back, while a bunch of single quotas given for countries which will not even notice the athlete and almost majority of inhabitants do not even know there such sport at the Olympics may be a waste at the end

Not saying I am in favor of it obviously. But I can understand the point, me personally, I will be surprised if I will have time to catch a minute of live watching Shorttrack in Milano for example, quite sure our TV will not make it in its main channel live screen. I guarantee you that already :p

I actually agree with you, but at the same time it would’ve been an embarrassment if Canada hadn’t qualified a full men’s team with how dominant we’ve been at short track the past few seasons so… glad we avoided that :p

you must watch it! it's one of the most spectacular sports you can find

sure, it might happen that some shitty judges ruin the competition sometimes, but the show on the ice is guaranteed :pope:

Slovak TV covering Hockey H24 is pretty obvious, though

Not until the second week, it's anything worth watching at the beginning of the games.

You know me, I´ll watch, but surely later on demand, or on platform, the chance to have it live in our TV is trully small though
