We used to have LGBT representation recently. In Tokyo we had 3 girls (Zillman rowing - no quota now, Jarmolinska - shooting - end her career, Ogar-Hill was in polish

wide team in sailing, but not start in mixed 470).  So now in Paris we will not have an open LGBT person. Ofcourse it's  a high possibiloty to have LGBT in person, but they are not officialy open about this (we used to have this kind of people, it's  not hard to know if you are checking social media). I understand this, but this kind of activity could be helpful for polish LGBT young people. But they are prefer choosing making ig content closer to modelling. It's their decision.

Yeah, I agree but I try to think in the positive half-glass-full way.

In the past everybody was assumed to be straight until they had their official coming out.

Nowadays it is still the same, but through instagram and other social media you can see athletes comfortable enough to show same-gender boyfriends/girlfriends even if they don't see themselves as ambassadors etc.

We have to remember that most of them have spent their entire lives focused on sport, so they many times are unaware of major social issues or just don't have the strength/time/abilities to do that.

That's why I like that IOC NOCs and affiliates (such as IOA) are creating more educational programs for the athletes.

What is so sad is how few Open men there are. Still more acceptance for gay women in sports than men.

Yeah. For Brazil I can only think of Arthur Nory (Gymnastics) and Douglas Souza (Volleyball) when considering active athletes who participated in the Olympics (both Rio 2016 medalists). And I don't think they will be in Paris (Nory has a slim chance of being selected, but Douglas doesn't want to play for the NT anymore). Maique (Volleyball) might join them but probably won't be on the team.

There's also a few that are pretty much "out" on social media but have never officially spoken about it.

Hopefully one day (although sadly I doubt it) this will be the normal situation: simply living their regular life like anyone else, without excplicitly 'having' (according to society) to announce them being anything else than straight.

Not sure if I'm wording this exactly how I mean it, so just to be clear: what I mean is that I hope one day (which sadly doesn't seem to be close) being gay, bi or anything is considered just as normal by society as being straight, and it's not a matter of 'if you don't explicitly come out, you must be straight' anymore.

I see some progress in the newer generations. Some younger athletes who are gay are just living their lives freely and I feel there isn't so much of a pressure to came out anymore. But of course each case is different and for most of them the possibility of living their truth comes only after they retire from the sport.

  • 2 weeks later...

In Tokyo we  :ISR had at least 3 representatives who are LGBTQ+ (from what I know) and all have (or will get ) the quata for Paris, raz hershko (judo) Anat lelior (surfing) and Moran Samuel (paralympic rowing)

I think we have one or 2 more in the community in the team, but these are the once I know of

Timo Cavelius was silver medalist at Astana Grand Slam!!! He is now in a qualifying position but still needs a good run at the WC to make sure he will go to Paris

    • Apparently this season will be last one in Kamil Stoch career if his results wont be enough good for his standards.
    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
