Oh wow, did the two Italian ladies in the 1500m final drink some Felix Felicis (for Harry Potter fans, for those who aren't, the other name for it is 'Liquid Luck')? :d

p.s. very disappointing starting field in this championship, especially in the relays (the women's team event has only 7 starters )

in a Continent with more than 50 Nations, and most of them having some kind of regular ice sports activity, it's not a nice presentation, to say the least :nopompom:

There just isn’t a lot of opportunity in that event. It’s not surprising that there’s only 12-15 (maybe 20 in Olympic years) entries in that event.

Many NOCs and NFs are going to enter events where they have the greatest possible ROI. I’m a proponent of sending as many athletes as possible in as many events as possible, but I understand the logic in the other entry method as well.

I understand the point, however 12/15 entries is somehow acceptable...but 7 (and 10 among the men, which might even be worse proportionally) is definitely a shame for the sport...and in any case, it used to be better in the recent past...I don't know why this year we're reaching an all-time low in terms of participation :mumble:

To be fair, 10 men's teams is only 1 fewer than four years ago (to keep with the Olympic cycle in terms of comparison), and that still included Russia. Another four years back, there were also only 11 teams, and that included both Russia and Belarus. Four years back again, there were a bit more, with 14 men's teams, but only 9 women's teams (including Russia and Belarus).

All in all, at least as far as the past 10-14 years or so are concerned, the numbers aren't really going down that much if you don't count the two now banned countries.

I do agree that in general it's a shame to have so few, but I also think it's understandable given that short track speed skating is quite a niche sport.
