Maybe a format similar to the madison could work for long track? Skaters could either push or hand sling on exchanges over a longer distance points race.

Oh over a distance longer than SIX (abridged because it's a mass start) LAPS maybe interesting tactics could come into play.

There was actually an arm sling this week-end, but that was because someone missed the proper handover (a push is just more effective).

Or we just ditch all the new-fashioned nonsense altogether and have five individual distances, like we had for decades and was always more than fine :p

Team pursuit is okay...ish. Team sprint, meh. The current mass start format is still just nonsense and maybe at best 20% of the distance a real mass start race should be, mixed events just don't work well at all. Nah, 500, 1000, 1500, 3000/5000 and 5000/10000 are more than fine.

This weekend it's Beijing time and in terms of entry lists we went back to normal: they were already there on Wednesday, as used to be the case but wasn't for Obihiro. Now the draws are there as well for tomorrow, with the main thing being Olympic 500m champion Gao Tingyu being back in competition for the first time since he took gold in the Olympics almost two years ago.

Terrible start to the WC season for Canada, only two podiums (1 gold, 1 silver) so far, and a very disappointing silver last week in Obihiro in the women’s team pursuit (hadn’t lost a race since before the pandemic) :cry:

There was certainly a lot of luck involved there re: the Olympic final.

But ya, it's not been a promissing season so far.

Can’t find a thread that suits what I have to say, so I’ll just post it here. From now on I’ll be updating all winter sport results (if I have time) in the following sports: curling (slams and any major events ex. European Championships), bobsleigh/skeleton/luge, speed skating, freestyle skiing, and snowboarding.

I know that @hckošice does alpine skiing, ski jumping, and hockey, @phelps does ski mountaineering,@maestro does figure skating, and @Dennis does short track speed skating. Can anyone do biathlon, cross country skiing, and nordic combined?

Jutta Leerdam has been beaten in the 1000m for the first time since she took Olympic silver in Beijing almost two years ago. Both Miho Takagi and Kimi Goetz were faster today.

Later today it's the men's 5k, with a fantastic draw: Sander Eitrem :NOR vs Davide Ghiotto :ITA could be a truly epic race to watch, both are excellent riders who get even way more excellent when they've got a straight-up fight.

I'm in mourning...

I'm already KO because of a flu, and now this (and the women's DH cancelled)...definitely not my best weekend

p.s. let's hope that Eitrem vs Ghiotto doesn't end up like in last season's world cup final :fingers:

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
    • The worst editions in XXI century for us were Vancouver: 5 medals (only 1 gold for Razzoli's on the penultimate day) and Sochi: 8 medals (but no gold). Turin was already a prelude to this bad period, although the number of gold medals was ok. Overall we won fewer medals at home than in 2002 and this was probably the only case in the 21st century when the host country won fewer medals at home than 4 years earlier, either in summer or winter. In general the years 2008-2016 were very bad in our sport, both in summer and winter. Only 2018 in Korea was a slight rebuild + 2 fantastic summer editions in Tokyo and Paris. in Beijing 2022 we won a lot of medals - 17 but only 2 gold (If it weren't for Gogga's injury, I think it would have been 4 gold).
    • Totallympics had  users at one point, but I haven't seen any hanging around in a while.
    • In terms of total medals, yes. In terms of golds, I’d be fine with anywhere from 6-8.   @intoronto you don’t think we’ll do better or at least the same? Bit surprising.
    • Tadeucci was very good and took bronze
