38-year old :CHI Kristel Kobrich qualified to the 1500m freestyle finals.

What a long career for her and she's still going strong. Assuming she stays healthy she's looking to go for a 6th Olympics, tied for the most among swimmers

Cutting relays to 8 or 12, and time for include sprint events...

Swimming doesn’t need anymore events, but relays should be cut to 12 to leave a couple more quotas for individual events.

I’d also cut the m/w 4x100 free (in favor of the mixed relay) to better use quotas, again.

How about a repechage system for the relays: 2 heats of six, top 2 qualify for final regardless of times. The bottom 4 in each heat swim a repechage, top 4 qualifying (or be really cruel and have four head to head swim-offs) for the final.

Agreed that swimming doesn't need more events and also there should be less relay quotas, but i would rather cut the 4 x 200 free relay, since it is pretty much always super uncompetitive.

Unfortunately wasn't able to watch live because of work. So if someone wants to post the results, please do.

Some thoughts from tonight:

  • Good to see Peaty back on the podium. Swimming is better when he's at his best. Great swim from Fink too.
  • Really happy for Koehler winning gold. You could definitely see how much it meant to her. She's now a contender for Olympic gold.
  • Can't remember the last time I saw two swimmers swimming in the wrong lane. Surprised their was no DQ. Armstrong should be the big favourite but Coetze could definitely challenge.
  • Tang has been having a good meet so far. She'll probably be the favourite for tomorrow but it still seems wide open. Happy that Angus was able to get in. Also had no idea Haughey was this good at breaststroke. Safe to say she's a pretty good swimmer.
  • Good to see Portugal get a gold medal. Ribeiro will get a dark horse in Paris.
  • Reeeaally slow women's Backstroke semis. Curzan looks like she's going to run away with the gold.
  • Men's 200m freestyle final looks to be a fun race tomorrow. Good to see Rapsys swimming well
  • Kate Douglass is a beast. Glad to see Pickrem swim a PB too.

Big PB and OQT for :GRE Makrygiannis (53.43)!

Our 2000/2001 generation of men's swimmers seems pretty great! I don't know enough about swimming to compare to other nations to be honest but we have Papastamos, Markos, Bilas, Englezakis, Makrygiannis, Aspougalis, Thomoglou...I don't want to jinx it but it seems like this can be our swimming golden generation :yes

And now he's into the final along with Christou. Also Ntountounaki got 5th in the women's butterfly.

Greek swimming has definitely (and quietly) come a long way in the last 20 years, but especially the last 5 or so.

Back-to-back world titles in the women’s 200m individual medley for :USA Kate Douglass!

Douglass is playing around with pacing only to end up with basically the same result.

26.96 1:00.44 (33.48) 1:36.69 (36.25) 2:07.09 (30.40) 2023 Trials
27.28 1:01.17 (33.89) 1:37.34 (36.17) 2:07.17 (29.83) 2023 Worlds
26.81 1:00.04 (33.23) 1:36.84 (36.80) 2:07.05 (30.21) 2024 Worlds

In order to break the world record she'll basically need to combine the best splits from each race:

26.81 33.23 36.17 29.83 = 2:06.04 WR

Edit: McIntosh probably has a better chance to improve her breaststroke than Douglass her backstroke.

    • Yes, he is ones of the first supporters of Milei, owner of one of the most important stock market of Argentina (Bull market), he was peronist and for "unknown reasons" start to be libertarian.   Even being libertarian in my case, i have to admit that him is one of the dumbest of "Milei supporters" and a clown when  he is in TV, he made me feel  embarrassed in many occasions.   Camila Giorgi being with him is.......inconceivable.
    • Ya but the replacement is Pat Bondi, a choice that is only better in so far as Pat Bondi isn't credibly accused of having had sex with multiple underaged girls.   Also, you might recognize this name: Pete Hoekstra has been nominated to be the US ambasador to Canada.
    • Camila Giorgi has a new BF Ramiro Marra. Apparently he's some politician/journalist from Argentina. One of Milei's supporters dare I say? @LDOG@konig

    • 2-1.   But it's good to have a great champion in the squad. I've been waiting for this my whole life. I wish we had such stars in every sport.
    • But he beat Mouat, who seems to be almost unbeatable
    • Argentina has a really solid lineup, especially if they have prepared seriously for this event. Of course they don't have a champion like we do, but in this format it is enough to win 1 match to play the decisive doubles.
    • Today we must to beat Argentina. It looks like Sinner will have to win all the singles and doubles for us to defend the title. So far, the 2nd and 3rd favorites before the tournament have already been eliminated: Esp and USA.
