Sadly :AFG 291-5 lost to :AUS 293-7

Glenn Maxwell, who got injured early in the game, scored 201.

Probably one of the best performances in any sport of this year.

I don't believe what I just saw! (the great Vin Scully, cit. :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

:AUS was dead and gone, already 7 wickets fallen and all their best (on paper) batsmen out, win probability down to 6% according to AI and then comes Glenn Maxwell...

he didn't start full gas, he was miraculously saved twice by :AFG missed catches and twice by VAR (the last one I don't think it was really how the AI reconstructed the bounce of the ball, I don't trust it at all), then he was cramping in all of his body and maybe injured in his lower back...

but suddenly he started to hit boundaries like there's no Tomorrow (and actually there wasn't Tomorrow for :AUS at that point) and finally he won the match (almost by himself) in style by posting an unbelievable double century (201 from 128 balls/not out), best individual performance of the 2023 CWC so far (and most likely it will stand until it's all over)

game #39, :AUS beat :AFG by 3 wickets

:AFG posted 291/5 in 50 overs, :AUS answered with 293/7 in 46.5 overs

Tomorrow the 8th gameday ends with game #40, the useless matchup between :ENG and :NED at 9.30 a.m. in Pune

@hckošice

a friend just made me notice a Hockey comparison between the Maxwell and Cummins partnership in Today's match and the Gretzky brothers' point record in the NHL...

Quote

"Together, Wayne and Brent hold the NHL record for most combined points by two brothers - 2,857 for Wayne and 4 for Brent"

:yikes:  :roflmao:

Insane innings by Maxwell. Surely one of the best ODI knock of all-time. Tough luck :AFG. Their inexperience showed in the later stages of the game when they didn't have any idea about how to stop Maxwell who could not even run.

A football analogy I read about Maxwell's innings was "This was like a player scoring 8 goals in last 10 mins of a game after pulling a hamstring and when his team is down 7-0"

game #40, :ENG beat :NED by 160 runs

:ENG choose to bat first and posted 339/9 in 50 overs, score that proved to be clearly out of reach for the :NED that in fact only managed to score 179/all out in 37.2 overs

so, now the gameday #8 is over, only one match per Nation is left on the schedule

we already know 3 of the 4 teams qualified to the semifinals (:IND :RSA :AUS), meanwhile the fight for the 4th and last spot in the top 4 is still on between :NZL :PAK and :AFG, all tied with 8 points, which means that most likely the decision will go down to some tie-breakers (number of total wins or NRR)

standings after gameday #8

https://www.cricketworldcup.com/standings

Tomorrow, game #41 is scheduled between :NZL and :SRI at 9.30 a.m. CET in Bengaluru

:NZL have the chance to post a score that would improve their NRR almost out of reach of :AFG and :PAK even if they would defeat their respective rivals in the last match of the round robin play and get tied with them in the total number of wins

on the other hand, if they miss this chance, they expose themselves to a possible comeback by the Asian teams, leaving their destiny in other teams' hands

:NZL vs :SRI will be interesting as rain is forecasted in Bangalore. Already its overcast in the morning with thick grey clouds

luckily, now it seems that the weather is good enough to play

and if things continue like that, it's gonna be a very short match, as :SRI wickets are falling one after another (they're already at 8)...

1st inning is almost gone

now they could boost their NRR to a level that :AFG and :PAK can't go whatever it happens in their respective matches in the next days

:SRI ended the 1st inning with 171/all out in 46.4 overs (they've been very good to resist for so long, when they had already 8 outs after less than 20 overs)

:NZL just started batting, the weather seems to give the match a chance to finish "naturally"

probably the shortest match of the entire CWC 2023 (on the clock, not in terms of overs completed)...:mumble:

game #41, :NZL dismantled :SRI by 5 wickets

as written earlier, :SRI posted a very modest 171/all out in 46.3 overs, then it took just 23.2 overs to :NZL to overtake that score and go 172/5

game details

https://www.cricketworldcup.com/match/102781

so, mission accomplished by the New Zealanders, they won and they did it by a big, comfortable margin that allowed them to improve their NRR to +0.743

:PAK are currently at +0.036 (and :AFG even worse, as they currently have a negative NRR), which means that they need not only a win, but a record breaking one next Saturday vs :ENG to try and make their NRR better than :NZL's

unlikely, very unlikely...

Tomorrow, game #42 features :RSA vs :AFG at 9.30 a.m. CET in Ahmedabad

before Today, it might have been a match to follow, but now I think :AFG have no chance at all to overtake :NZL in the standings, therefore I don't know how they're gonna play Tomorrow, with what attitude? :mumble:

She wasn’t a top-tier athlete in that program anymore. She was at the end of her career. I would personally would rather race against Katie. She’s not as competitive as the other athletes,” he said. “It’s probably really unfair to say and not really where I want to go with this but that’s where we are with that.”   Uhlaender: “If I were Canada, I would be concerned in how this coach is representing the Olympic values for his country,” Uhlaender told Fox News Digital. “He hurt a whole field of athletes, all with dreams, and this sends the message that they don’t matter unless they are number one. All athletes matter, and we all deserve to compete fairly, with integrity, and respect. He did not respect anyone in that field. “This is not about my resume or how good the athletes were in the race. This is about the fact that he intentionally manipulated the competition to hurt myself and 13 other countries because he felt it necessary to eliminate all possibility. That is against the spirit of sport and not what the Olympic movement represents.”   Isn't it great when other people's dirty laundry is aired?  /sarcasm     (I was a little surprised to see NPR pick this up, but per this article, Uhlaender preemptively recorded the phone call after receiving a text from Cecchini that said he had 'bad news' for her.)
    • Idea (that I don't want to mess with right now, but someone else can steal the idea): Could feed the docs from LA28 + Paris 2024 through AI and see what it says.  (Would just take downloading them, perhaps merging them for ease of upload, and passing it through.)
    • If you have time would love to see a sport by sport overview of the changes/new sports
    • Slowly going through the documents.   Looks like canoe slalom qualifiers will be a bit different. More kayak cross quotas which will let nations to essentially qualify two kayakers.
    • How about we choose either Rome or Milano  I hate this timeline we have entered of multiple host cities / countries. The football World Cup became ludicrous, we don't need the Olympics to join them. At least not more than they already are.

The FIBA World Cup Qualifier in P.R. is a throwaway tour- nament for Team USA after the Gold Medal Game debacle. This is the perfect environment to test the Young Guns to see who has it, who does not, and who needs more devel- opment. The 2026 FIBA World Cup in Berlin is the tuneup for 2028 in L.A. • I'm also reminded as I know Canadians are painfully aware that if figures hadn't been a part of the 1984 Olympics, then Brian Orser would have won gold.  Hamilton could have finished 4th in the free skate that year and still beat Orser who finished 7th in the figures
