Fauci: "Face masks are only an addition to physical distance, which is the absolute number one precaution to take, absolutely not a replacement."

Now it's pretty much definitive: every single person from some sort of authority who is standing or walking in a group (without plenty of distance), no matter whether or not they have masks, should be fired.

So I guess the US national stockpile of medical resources is for no one...

My biggest fear is that it’s only going to get worse. We’re not testing enough, we don’t have enough resources, and we have a completely incompetent leader.

Very interesting article for reading.

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/04/03/asia/tokyo-coronavirus-japan-hnk-intl/index.html

There are fears a coronavirus crisis looms in Tokyo. Is it too late to change course?

Excerpts from the article

As of Friday, Tokyo had tested fewer than 4,000 people in a city of 13.5 million. And just 39,466 people had been tested in this nation of 125 million, according to the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare.

That's a tiny fraction compared to countries in the region and around the world. As of Friday, South Korea -- which has a much smaller population than Japan -- had tested more than 440,000 people.

The Japanese government says its testing regime is adequate and suitably targeted to high risk cases.

"Testing people with a low probability of novel coronavirus would be a waste of resources," Japan's Health Ministry told CNN in a statement. "We ask people with some symptoms to stay home for a period of time."

Turned down for a test

Coronavirus patient Issei Watanabe spoke to CNN from his Tokyo hospital room. He struggled to breathe in between coughing fits. Doctors consider his a "mild case" and expect he'll be discharged on Tuesday.

Watanabe is 40, a non-smoker, in good health. His symptoms came on quickly. Body aches, chills, no sense of taste or smell.

When he asked for a coronavirus test, he says he was turned down -- and had to endure five days with a fever above 40 degrees Celsius -- 104 degrees Fahrenheit -- before he was finally allowed to take a test, which came back positive.

Watanabe says he infected at least two people during that time.

"People don't know what to do. There's a real lack of good information," Watanabe said. "Your life is in your hands. Stay home. Please stay home. Don't go out."
Watanabe worries about the tens of millions of Japanese who are older than 65. He knows he'll recover, but many in Japan's aging society won't.

Infectious disease experts warn of a steep price in human life -- if coronavirus spreads rapidly, in this rapidly aging society.

"Coronavirus is very dangerous to old people," said Masahiro Kami, executive director of Japan's nonprofit Medical Governance Research Institute. He said most coronavirus patients in Japan are likely showing few, if any, symptoms.

"When they are asymptomatic, they can transmit the coronavirus to others," Kami warned.

Another interesting article about Donald Trump.

https://khn.org/news/donald-trumps-wrong-claim-that-anybody-can-get-tested-for-coronavirus/

Excerpts from the article above.

“Anybody that wants a test can get a test. That’s what the bottom line is,” Trump told reporters March 6 during a visit to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Moments later, Trump added that anybody who needs a test gets one.

“But as of right now and yesterday, anybody that needs a test — that’s the important thing — and the tests are all perfect, like the letter was perfect. The transcription was perfect, right? This was not as perfect as that, but pretty good,” Trump said. (Trump’s mention of “the letter” and “transcription” was a reference to his recent impeachment.)

    • Nah, I don't think that we'll have some problems.
    • The last time this happened - all three athletes on the podium had zero podiums before - was Les Saisies sprint in December 1990: Uschi Disl, Elena Melnikova (future Sergei Tchepikov's wife) & Kerstin Moring. The latter two never finished on the World Cup podium again. This was also the race where Disl became the second youngest World Cup winner ever (currently down to third because of Neuner).
    • In general almost all Fisi sports have been doing terribly this season. One debacle after another and the Colturi case completes the scale of embarrassment. Apart from single star like Goggia, Brignone or Pellegrino, only the alpine snowboard looks good.
    • Unfortunately the Italian men's team is poorly prepared for the season. Everyone is in terrible shooting form. Somewhere a mistake was made in the preparations. We are recording a big regression compared to the previous season. It`s becoming more and more likely that we will not stand on the podium even once this season (I can't remember the last time something like that happened). In the Nations Cup we are in 6th place and we may lose 6 starting places in the World Cup from next season. I`m increasingly worried about what will happen in the Olympic season. Without Vittozzi returning to top form, we completly will not count.    In general our entire winter season looks very bad: biathlon as above, cross-country skiing - still only Pellegrino, luge - poor form, alpine skiing without Goggia and Brignone doesn`t exist.
    • how is hell , 3 dead they say ..i dont believe it
    • A few updates from the IFA after last month's Board of Directors meeting.   Looks like there will be no host quota for  China at the 2025 World Games. This is surprising after the IFA went to Chengdu last year to put on a clinic. No doubt that given a year  China has the resources and athletes to field a team that would be competitive in the placement matches.    Namibia will replace  China on the women's side. While  will replace  on the men's side.     Namibia finished 8th at the last Women's World Championships, while  New Zealand finished 11th at the 2023 Men's World Championship.
