How is golf rated? Was it a success? In Brazil, nobody (or probably very few people) cares about it, but I suppose it's popular in many countries?

Golf debuting in Rio was... unfortunate because it required actually building a venue. Golf in 2020, 2024, 2028 and 2032 are all using existing venues that required no or very minor renovations. So I suspect it's pretty safe. It's a similar situation to tennis, building a venue is very expensive but most cities that would host the Olympics already have an adequate venue nearby.

My understanding is that Olympic golf has actually been doing pretty good numbers ratings wise, at least in the US.

Well, I feel Race-Walking is cooked

race walking has cooked itself by becoming more and more a farce because of incompetent, biased and sometimes corrupted judging :bones:

Thought they would bring Russia back too. I guess they want to test the waters with Belarus.

I'm glad they are getting rid of host sports. It will force them to make a decision on baseball/softball and cricket. Those stadiums are not cheap, but they do bring in a lot of revenue.

I think they are already building a Diamond stadium for Baseball for the Brisbane Games, so I will wonder that it would be already spoken...

Belarus is not officially participating in the war, but allows attacks on Ukraine from there and Russian troops are there for many years (in fact, it's a country 100% dependent on Russia because of their troops there). I think this is testing the ground for a future Russian return. I'm curious what they'll do with Belarus ice hockey? Will they join the World Elite next year, or force them to play in lower divisions? In Russia's case, there's a 99% chance they'll join World Elite after their return.

Separating Greco-Roman from freestyle wrestling doesn't make much sense given their own definition of discipline based on field of play. So that likely meand they are going to kick it out.

And interesting that Estanguet in the Programme Commission signed the death sentence of canoe slalom. Talk about forgetting where you come from.

remember that Estanguet axed Karate (a very French sport) from Paris program for Breakdance

what can go wrong with him in this commission?

they already have a baseball stadium, hosting a team in the uprising Australian Baseball League

of course right now it's a small stadium (good for the league purpose), but it's not that they have to build it from scratch, they just need to increase the seating capacity (with temporary stands) for the Games

the problem with Baseball is always the same: there's no chance to see the best on best playing at the Olympics (LA 2028 would be an exception, if it happens...and I'm not sure at all yet)

this puts it in danger more than any other cost issue

Freestyle wrestling is absolutely safe. But because it is now a different discipline than Greco-Roman it will be evaluated differently.

Greco-Roman is in trouble because there is no women’s event. Assuming Nordic combined either gets dropped or has women’s events added (hard to imagine neither of those happens) then Greco-Roman wresting would be the *only* discipline without a women’s event.

come on!

artistic swimming basically has no men competing, rhythmic gymnastic is officially a female only sport

if they axe those 2 disciplines, then we can start talking of removing GR wrestling (which is also one of the sports present since the birth of the modern games)

until then, it shouldn't even be an argument

Don't remember that. If IOC faces legal challenges on top of the internal politics... Yeah, good luck to cut anything.

I don’t think this process could be legally challenged- the IOC seems to have good lawyers now a days.

    • Well, the IOC could say to World Aquatics,  you can only have all those dozens of Pool Swimming relay events, if you agree to get rid of the Open Water events.  Then of course World Aquatics will listen to their sponsors and say "keep the relays" and the IOC gets rid of Open Water without having their fingerprints on the dagger.
    • Anyway, in the end there are only going to be athletes who actually lose with all this. I might be happy to see sport X gone, someone else might be fine with removing discipline Y or whatever, but any decision to remove anything has a way bigger effect than us not seeing them on TV - in any sport there's the athletes whose dream is one day competing in the Olympics and they will not just see a decision and think "aw, now I won't see that", but basically see one of their biggest life goals shattered by some people's decisions.   It needs no explanation that sports where this is not an issue, so where the Olympics are not the main event, can safely be cut from the program.
    • It always used to be the Podebrady Pideset (50) didn't it?  Now it is just the Podebrady Race Walking, but still an important early season event.
    • I don’t really get your point?   I think open water swimming could go as well. Or maybe changed completely,
    • Splitting shooting in two is a big one. Suggests bug cuts there could happen.
    • But there's a difference between an expensive venue that needs to be built up entirely for one sport, or a sport that has a sole venue but a venue one doesn't need to construct from scratch, like mountain biking. I know they often do, but they don't need to build a whole track, the entire point of mountain biking is to go into the woods and mountains and stuff that's already there.
    • Like I say, in the Olympic context it has meaning in terms of the numbers of athletes competing and the medals given.  Conspiracy theory:  the IOC is doing it to make it more likely that federations will cut their OWN sports by setting up a  rivalry between say, canoe slalom and canoe sprint, or pool swimming and open water swimming etc etc.
    • Out of all the sports rumored to be cut the only ones I would be fine with removing (Even though they should stay) are Modern Pentathlon, race walking, squash and eventing. Flag football and lacrosse are sports I personally like but there isn't enough global popularity to stay in my opinion.   Baseball, Softball, Cricket and Canoe slalom are sports that should 100% be at the games but I understand if they are cut from games where there is not a good venue available.
    • What exactly would be the issue with having women's Greco-Roman, other than 'we aren't used to that'? I have no idea why men do two similar but somewhat different things, while the women do only one
    • Some things are also just a bit more...logical. Can one really consider aerials to be freestyle skiing, for example? Whereas slopestyle, halfpipe and big air have kind of the break dancing 'yo yo, do what's cool and see what happens, peace out' kind of vibe, aerials is more like gymnastics or figure skating: bound to very strict and precise rules and much less of the 'hippie vibe' (for lack of a better term)
