For those that don’t know, he lost the medals because at some time prior to 1912 he had also been a pro baseball player, which was interpreted (by some, not all) as a violation of the Olympic rules.

What a wonderful precedent to set. I guess at some point in the future they will start re-awarding gold medals to caught dopers and downgrading to silver those who played fair (at the time).

Interestingly Thorpe was only reinstated as joint champion in 1982 when it was discovered that the IOC broke their own rules when they disqualified him.

Did they though? Or was it a new interpretation?

At any rate, keeping two gold medals is the only fair way of working around this. It's not the original gold medalists' fault that they read the rules wrong, interpreted it differently later, or whatever combination of the two things.

In 1982 the original doucuments from 1912 were found in the IOC archives. The rules stated that 30 days after the Games ended, if no appeal was made, then the results could not be changed. Thorpe was not stripped of his medal until 1913.

Also I'm told that today's decision would not have taken place if any of the relatives of the Swede and Norwegian who were upgraded to gold in 1913 would have objected.

New rule for Olympic medallists: be sure to write in your testament to your descendants that they should object and protest in case someone tries to get your medal 100 years later.

Yeah, re-writing history is never good. Never.

Is it re-writing or correcting though? According to @Dragon, the IOC broke their own rules originally.

I think it’s important to consider this as well. “They confirmed that Wieslander himself had never accepted the Olympic gold medal allocated to him, and had always been of the opinion that Jim Thorpe was the sole legitimate Olympic gold medallist. ”

I’d have to defer to @Dragon, but I believe there’s also some uncertainty about other athlete’s amateur credentials as well. Unless I’m mixing this up with something else or hearsay.

Its an incredibly unfortunate situation all the way around.

Will they give honorary gold OG medals to Karl Schranz or Ingemar Stenmark next? In like 70 years time? On the base IOC rules were inappriopriate "at the time". Or will a new scientific research in 2145 claim some of these dopers didn't actually profit from doping and people living in early XXI century didn't have enough knowledge to come to a fair conclusion? You NEVER tamper with history or else something bad always comes from it. Always. Like that Nikolai Yezhov photo with Stalin. Now you see him and now you don't.

    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory

    • For me, these were very good Olympics, and British sport benefited greatly from them, and is still benefiting. I fear it will be much worse here. Canada also benefited very good on Vancouver 2010 – this is very good see in the medal standings of subsequent Winter Games after 2010 and earlier.
    • Nobody hates Britain more than the British media so… I recall it being quite a pessimistic tone before the London games started.
    • I'm curious what was written before London 2012? Did they attack their own country, or did they just keep quiet?

    • Very true point.  Although I think at this point everyone is just holding their collective breath until the test event.  The NHL isn't going to rage anymore until then because it's not like that would make the arena progress go any quicker
