I can't believe it, Italian athletes have done nothing but fail at everything for the past few weeks

Agreed, their performance at the fencing world championships has been beyond pathetic.

Italian fans have very high expectations. I think it is impressive that they made the semifinal in 2 out of 3 team events. Not sure how much more they expected, didn't know that Italy was seeded much higher. Also you have to ask how italian fans would react if their team would have underperformed as much as China did.

c'mon! they were great, but still far from being perfect (we did underperformed badly in 3 out of 6 team events -way more important than the individual's this year), with the whole sabre department at risk of not qualifying (and even in Tokyo -one of the lower points in the recent years- we had a rich full set of teams)

we did expect to earn the Olympic Quota place at least in the men's division (we won the European Champs just a few weeks ago, not mentioning our great "tradition" in this event in the last 30 years or so, which doesn't count right now, but helps to build expectation) and better results in the individual events (where we won Olympic medals just 2 years ago with both men and women and a few world cup tournaments with some regularity thanks to Nespoli)

and having missed that quota place by just an inch is definitely more disappointing, more frustrating than not being competitive at all through the whole week

in such case, most likely nobody would have said a single word about this event, just swallowed the bad medicine

I think that you know now how it did feel when Polish athletes wasted most of chances to qualify to Paris via European Games, mostly in boxing :/

Shoot-off between :NED De Laat and :IND Gopichand Swami in the women's compound QFs. Really great match, only two 9s for each throughout the entire contest.

The 17 year old World Youth Champion Aditi Gopichand is into semis faces gold medal favourite Jyothi Surekha Vennam.

Perfect 10s for both in the first end!

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.

    • Weightlifting We now have six events per gender with a total of 10 athletes per event.   The Olympic Qualification Rankings will be based on the sum of the total results of five events (three from period 1 and two from period 2). The top 8 will qualify.   The 9th spot will also be based on the OQR, but it will go to the highest ranked athlete from an unrepresented continent.   The 10th spot will be split between the host and universality (3 each per gender). Should the United States qualify normally then their host quota will be reduced, first going to an athlete from an unrepresented continent then to the overall highest ranked athlete.   Additionally, a "Best Lifter" will be awarded which would give the nation the chance to qualify 4 athletes rather than the max of 3.
