What records will break in Fukuoka?

I think

Woman's:

100 butterfly (macneil or huske)

50 breast (Meilutytė)

400 im (mcintosh)

400 free (titmus)

100 back (McKeown or Smith)

Men's:

400 im, 200 im ( marchand)

100 back (ceccon) second round

Obviously impossible to predict this early. I think the following records in olympic events are safe: Men's 50/400/800 free, men's 100/200 breast, men's 200 back, men's 400 free relay, men's medley relay, women's 50/800/1500 free, women's 100 breast, women's 200 fly, women's 200 IM. The 3 records in olympic events for each gender that are (in my opinion) the most likely to be broken:

Men: 400 IM, 100 free, 200 IM/200 fly/100 back

Women: 200 back, 100 fly, 400 free/100 back/200 breast/400 IM/800 free relay

Number of world records in olympic events that were broken at the last 5 world championships:

2013: 2 (both by Ledecky)

2015: 5 (4 on the women's side (2 of them by Ledecky) + the mixed medley relay)

2017: 5 (4 on the women's side + the mixed medley relay)

2019: 4 (2 on both sides, but the 2 on the women's side were both in relays)

2022: 2 (both on the men's side)

-> From 2013 to 2017 not a single world record on the men's side was broken (but 10 on the women's side), but at the last two editions all 4 individual records that were broken were on the men's side. So if i would have to guess the number of records that will be broken, i would say 3 or 4.

Also interesting:

Oldest world record on the men's side: 400 IM (Phelps in 2008)

Oldest world record on the women's side: 200 free (Pellegrini in 2009)

Records on the men's side that were set before 2010: 50 free, 200 free, 400 free, 800 free, 200 back, 400 IM, 400 free relay, 800 free relay

Records on the women's side that were set before 2010: 200 free, 200 fly

Don't know about the women's 400 IM. It's on the last day and McIntosh will be tired, her best chance to attack that record will be on the trials if she is a bit rested. The other ones are hit or miss, I think only the 400FR will fall, maybe the 50BR.

On the men's side, Phelps record in the 400IM seems gone unless something happens to Marchand. The 200 IM I think will be a little tougher. The other one than can fall is the 200 BR.

Also interesting:

Last time a world record in men's freestyle (relays excluded) was broken at the world championships: 2011 (Sun Yang in the 1500 free)

Last time a world record in women's freestyle (relays excluded) was broken at the world championships: 2015 (Katie Ledecky with the 800/1500 free double)

Last time a world record in women's freestyle (relays excluded) was broken at the world championsips by someone not named Ledecky: 2009

Oldest world record on the men's side: 400 IM (Phelps in 2008)

Oldest world record on the women's side: 200 free (Pellegrini in 2009)

If Paltrinieri were going to break the 1500 WR he'd have got it already imo so I think it's safe.

Sjostrom set the 50 and 100 free world records at 2017 worlds.

While the 4IM is on the final day she will probably have two days off before it.

Sjostrom set the 50 and 100 free world records at 2017 worlds.

You are right about Sjöstrom, I am going to edit my comment. I think Paltrinieri set a new PB just last year, so (surprisingly) I see no signs of decline.

luckily, no decline for him, yet.

but he's investing a lot of energy and training in the Open Water races, which is his main focus in 2023 (I mean, to qualify for the Olympics is not a joke in OWS, he just can't make any mistake in the World Race over 10k).

I'm not sure it will give him room to swim below 14.30 at the world champs, when OWS is also before the races in the Pool.

however, if there's a chance for him to break that barrier, it's at the Olympics, not this year.

hi, i thought we could. go make a prediction for the medals for the swimmers in fukuoka and compare opinions

For example, I think that summer will get the most gold (200 im, 400 im, 200 butterfly and 400 free) and maybe the 200 free will get a medal

These would be my anticipated oredictions to podiums, I would like to know yours in comments

I don’t think that it makes much sense to make predictions when many countries haven’t even had their trials yet. Personally I would be surprised if the following swimmers would win an individual medal:

Women:

50 free: Wasick

100 free: Steenbergen

100 breast: Van Niekerk/„China“ (Meilutyte? Elendt? King? Pilato?)

100 fly: Hansson/Wattel

400 IM: Franceschi/Colbert/Forrester

The :HUN provisional team for the World Championships

These swimmers have locked spots for the WCh. They can withdraw from certain events and allow other Hungarian swimmers to compete.

24 swimmers are listed, others can gain spots in events where there aren't two locked athletes.

M 50 free: Szebasztián Szabó

W 50 free: Petra Senánszky

M 100 free: Kristóf Milák, Nándor Németh
