As promised, I will write here about TANZANIA :TAN from time to time.

Before we go to Paris 2024 quailification chances, let's go back into history first.

Tanzania never won a gold at the olympics.

They got 2 silver medals.

Both in athletics in Moscow 1980.

From Polish perspective, the most known is Men's 3000m Steeplechase when Filbert Bayi was chased by Bronisław Malinowski and finally it was 1. POL 2. TAN

A run for ages, very-well remembered here in Poland, as Monzanator correctly pointed it out in one of other thread here.

Second TAN silver was Suleiman Nyambui in Men's 5000m.

...

In Tokyo 2020 TAN had 3 athletes, 2 men and 1 woman, all of them competing in marathon in Sapporo.

So, to the best of my knowledge, but I may be wrong here, TAN was the only one NOC which didn't perform in Tokyo actually, all of them performed in Sapporo only.

The best result was obviously Alphonce Felix Simbu who finished 7th in men's marathon and he is by far the best Tanzanian athlete in olympic sports these days. Simbu was in the leading pack for quite a long time but he couldn't get a medal in the end.

They also got DNF in men's marathon (Gabriel Gerald Geay) and 24th place in women's race (Failuna Matanga).

Simbu was a flag bearer in the closing ceremony, he obviously deserved it.

He went on to win silver medal in marathon at 2022 Commonwealth Games.

It was their best result in Birmingham, they got only one silver there and additionally - 2 bronze medals in boxing.

...

TBC...

I’ll provide updates on San Marino here :SMR every once in a while

Before the 2020 Olympics, San Marino had never won an Olympic medal. In Tokyo, things changed, and they managed to win TWO medals at Tokyo in shooting (Silver- Mixed Trap, Bronze- Women’s). Although the mixed trap event will be removed for the Paris 2024 Olympics, they should have two chances at the podium in men’s/women’s trap, along with Myles Amine in men’s 86kg wrestling.

They did have a WR & Gold Medal at the 1974 Commonwealth Games - Filbert Bayi in the 1500m.  But sadly there was an African boycott in Montreal 76, so Bayi missed out a big chance then.  After that, they just never developed as neighbours Kenya & Uganda did.

This 1976 boycott was not good.

I don't think it helped the cause actually.

And it gave a green-light for the 1980 and 1984 boycotts somehow...

And you are right, Bayi would be a gold medal contender in 1976. It wouldn't be easy for Garderud and Malinowski to beat him in Montreal.
