Men's Ice Hockey IIHF Under 20 World Championship 2022

Men's Ice Hockey IIHF Under 20 Division I Group A World Championship 2022

Tournament Format

Due extended sanctions of :RUS and :BLR IIHF decided that

No team from last years Top division Tournament has been relegated and at same time No team from lower Division I Group A Tournament advanced to this Tournament.

Which means same 10 Nations will play the Men´s Under 20 World Championship Top Division Tournament also this year.

The 10 teams are divided into two, five-team Preliminary groups A and B in the Preliminary Round.

After a single round-robin series in each group, the top four teams from each group advance to the Playoff Round while the fifth-placed team in each group will have to play the Relegation Round

The top four placed teams from the Preliminary will play a cross-over Quarterfinal game: 1A vs. 4B, 1B vs. 4A, 2A vs. 3B and 2B vs. 3A. The winner of each Quarterfinal moves onto the Semi-Finals.

In the semi-finals the best-ranked team - criteria: 1) placement in the group, 2) points in the preliminary round, 3) goal difference in the preliminary round, 4) goals scored in the preliminary round, 5) seeding coming into the tournament - will play against the lowest-ranked semi-finalist. The 2nd-best ranked semi-finalist will play the 3rd-best ranked semi-finalist. The host if qualified, or otherwise the best-ranked semi-finalist according to beforementioned criteria, shall play the early game. The time slots will officially be determined after the quarter-final games.

The winner of each Semi-Final game will move onto the Gold Medal Game, while the losers will play in the Bronze Medal Game.

The quarter-final losers will be ranked 5th to 8th according to 1. their position in the group, 2. their preliminary-round record (1. points, 2. goal difference, 3. goals scored).

Relegation Round

The two last-placed (5th) teams play a best-of-three Relegation Round series.

The third game is only played if needed. The winner of the series plays alongside all 8 Quarterfinalists again at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, while loser is relegated to Division I Group A next year.

The common joke in Slovakia last days is:

"Bad news slovaks, Juraj Slafkovský is playing good" :p

Yeah, sadly, this means for the nation only one thing, Montreal will not release him for the World Juniors and keep him in the NHL during the tournament.

There still apparently a mini-mini-mini-mini-mini-tiny-chance the Habs will accept and hear the voices of the whole under-tatras land inhabitants and let the kid go to the worlds, but it will equal probably a christmas miracle if it will happen.

However, the coach announced yesterday the list of 28 players which will prepare in Canada for the WCh, 3 of them will have to leave the team after last Exhibition game in the night from 23rd December to Christmas Eve against Austria.

The 24th December will be also the final date our team will announce the final 25 names list for the WCh. At that time we should also know the final and defenitive answer from Montreal Canadiens about Slaf presence at the tournament, but again the chance is so small that it is almost inexistant.

    • Right now  Spulber and  Ipcioglu are even on points but Ipcioglu is ranked ahead by one position. If Spulber moves ahead they no longer need a D.2 quota, Turkey only gets a D.2 quota (drop to one) and then continental cup ranking would determine the final quota. Unless the FIS does something strange like they briefly did in September and give a country 2 quotas in D.2.
    • Just realized that there are no 50km or Relay races in the World Cup season leading up to the Olympics, and the 50k is only contested once in March in Norway.  (I'm new to following Cross-Country skiing, but I would have thought athletes would have had some 'warm-up' competitions before the Olympics during the season. Also, I could be wrong...but I didn't see these events in the WC schedule.)

    • 20 nations are qualified on the men's side right now (even without China). Canada is only in bc Boyd-Clowes has resumed his career.   There is no nation count limit indeed, I only counted the qualified athletes' nations (20 for men, 16 for women).
    • Well, half of this is not true. There is no minimum nation count - even less nations were expected by FIS ski jumping higher-ups than there are qualified now. The last 4 quotas for men are for NOCs with one or none athletes qualified. So we should complete 3 super teams and get China with one ski jumper in the men's individual competitions.

    • I think it depends on the sport.    On one hand, I admire the meritocracy of trials for Dutch speed skating or US athletics... but I don't think it's necessarily a recipe for optimal results forcing athletes to run the gauntlet at incredibly competitive trials, then turn around and try to peak again in short order at the Olympics.  It's something Canada does for our curling teams, and I think it's been a big part of the reason we've underperformed internationally more than one would expect. The successes we've had I feel are largely in spite of the qualification system, not because of it. Granted curling is a much different sport, but in it's case and it were up to me, I'd do like Sweden or GB, select the team the prior season then let them properly plan their seasons around the Olympics and preparing properly... rather than needing to peak for trials, and pouring whomever survives onto a plane for the Olympics a few weeks later For speedskating, I like the Canadian system. It's a mix of international results and trials. The medal contenders largely have their spots sewn up, so trials are a none-issue... and the rest are mostly just making up the numbers, so a heavier weighting on trials results is fair enough as no one else in that situation has done enough to solidify their position prior, so might as well play the hot hand. The Dutch having such incredible depth would obviously need to set the pre-qualification bar higher, but I don't think it would hurt them. But then again, their entire system is build around performance on demand... and that's produced great results, even if a few Ted-Jan Bloeman's wash out along the way
