Biathlon 2022 - 2023 Discussion Thread

Interesting article about how Biathlon seems to be getting the better youth skiers.

Daria Virolainen might move to the Finnish Team.

Word is Kazakhstan secretly approached Dzinara Alimbekava over a nationality change but she declined it. Her father comes from Kazakhstan and she was born there too.

That's a shame. I don't much care for most Russian or Belarussian biathletes (as in, I'm neutral towards them), but I do like Alimbekava.

I thought Virolainen retired years ago :yikes:

From what the article said, she recently (2021?) had her 3rd child.  She skied on the Russian Cup last winter, even before the Russian ban.  She is 33 years old, has lived in Finland and participated in the Finnish Summer Biathlon Championships and finished 2nd in one race.  Her Russian career was over, but it seems like she wants to extend her career.

The Finnish Biathlon Federation has made a statement on Virolainen.

From the President -

" ACCORDING TO OUR FEDERATION, SHE IS NOT A FINNISH CITIZEN. THE ATHLETE DID NOT CONTACT OUR UNION. I KNOW SHE HAS BEEN LIVING IN FINLAND FOR A LONG TIME. ALL FINNISH CITIZENS CAN PARTICIPATE IN QUALIFYING COMPETITIONS. ANYONE CAN CONTACT US. THERE ARE STRICT SELECTION CRITERIA. LET’S RESPECT THE TRAINING PROCESS OF ATHLETES."

Sorry for the all Caps, that is what the quote was in.  This is kind of easy to see what they are doing here.  There might be legs to this rumor.

Anastasiya Kuzmina, Paulína & Ivona Fialková and Jakub Borguľa  officially launched with the stored snow for the next season the new track in the biathlon center in Osrblie during today´s official opening.

The brand-new asphalt track and several other innovations and improvements at the stadium cost over a million euros and took almost 2 years to be done, however this 2.5-kilometer new track will host the World Summer Biathlon Championships next year. But the most important thing is that the new internationally approved track allows our biathletes to train and prepare in domestic conditions all year round and they will not have to travel abroad for training camps as mentioned Paja to the TV during interview.

There is already a candidate for the 2028 World Champs.  Hochfilzen has announced their candidature.  It is widely speculated that Le Grand Bonnard will also bid.

The Biathlon Congress Handbook (agenda) is available here.

One thing that I noticed here is who was not at the meeting.  The missing Federations were:

Full Members

Argentina

Armenia

Liechtenstein

Chinese Taipei

Uzbekistan

Provisional Members

Andorra

Dominican Republic

    • ""The most important thing, in my opinion, is mental preparation" - Maria Vynnyk said this on Thursday after winning the first major gold medal; maybe this is where the secret lies. As you said, Ukrainian girls have always been strong, but not dominant at continental level; my conjecture is that the Russian invasion has made them mentally stronger, giving them that extra edge needed to tilt the balance in the final stages of a competition.

    • Does the CAS have the authority to address from someone who believes the judges made a mistake in a given discipline? Pizzolato's last attempt at Paris 2024, which earned him the bronze medal, was controversial, but what does the CAS have to do with it? Even if the judges made a mistake then, the result won't change and this isn't the only case where someone feels wronged with this in world of sports. Unless, of course, they have some evidence of corruption or something like that
    • If Pizzolato will to return, would it be to the 86 kg category, or the 94 kg category, like Nasar? In 2024, they were both in the 89 kg category, which will no longer be at the Olympics, but in 2021 in Tokyo, Pizzolato won a medal in the 81 kg category.   Of course, it's unclear what's going on with the rape accusations- personally, unfortunately, I don't think he was ever a sweet angel- he was accused of other immoral things also 10 years ago, but gang rape? I find that hard to believe... Besides, Moldova has appealed about his bronze medal from Paris 2024 to the CAS- the verdict was supposed to be in February. Do you know anything about this? Did they have any grounds for this lawsuit at all?
    • Ukraine won 6 gold medals out of 10 in the women's competotion  + 1 silver and 1 bronze. Where do they get these girls from? It's always been a strong country, but they have never dominated like this. I wonder if their training methods would work in another country and if their coaches have any offerts to job from other countries? However, there is a significant decline in women's judo in Ukraine, so maybe they have directed all their resources and money towards wrestling?   In fact, Ukraine dominates Europe as much as Japan does the world- they have the best school in women's wrestling. In 2024, Ukraine only won 1 silver medal at the Paris Olympics? So even domination in Europe doesn't guarantee even 1 gold medal at the Olympics. Although, of course, if Italy for example, can't even win 1 bronze medal at the European Championships, then there's no point in even going to the World Championships...
    • Sablikova started on the road cycling and just almost qualified for Rio 2016. Maybe Lollobrigida would like to join the Italian track team? She has the good character and 2 medals at the Olympics, one in winter and one in summer, would be a legendary achievement, not only in Italy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Sáblíková
    • One Wiebes is worth more than the all Italian team with Balsamo/Fidanza, etc., that much clear. Even if the Netherlands loses its dominance in the men's sprint, Wiebes will win 2-3 gold medals in other events. Just relax, man.
    • I'm most worried about our women's team in the pursuit – we have a reserve squad, but not advancing to the top 8 is a shame. We recently competed with out 1 team and had not good in 1 round. It doesn't look good. And the Netherlands are already taking Wiebes to the track team and will soon dominate the Madison/Omnium as well. Balsamo and Paternoster haven't made any progress for years and the our women's team at the Olympics has little chance to win a medal. Italy might even win World Championship/European Championship gold in the years after the Olympics, etc., but when the real fight comes, the UK or the USA will always beat us
