Looks like it's a stadium issue.  They're at Stade de France, so they probably need it to start/finish a couple of days earlier to get the stadium ready for athletics.

I mean, they could just make the tournaments, two-day affairs like they usually do in the World Series.

Personally I really dislike having events before the opening ceremony. Football is fine because they have to and I can begrudgingly accept team sports like handball, but for something like archery which has no reason. The sport isn't even doing anything on Saturday so it isn't a scheduling issue.

Speaking of surfing, when they say Saturday, which time zone is Saturday? Probably France (which would make Tahiti's time Sunday) or else the surfing event will begin during the same time as the opening ceremony.

Huh? Tahiti is behind France. It's saturday evening/night in France but saturday morning on Tahiti.

Both handball and hockey ending before the final weekend is just sad!

If I can only go for a week, I guess I would go for the first one to get some triathlon, rugby and mountain bike action while track cycling would be the main thing in the 2nd half.

Think my way too early personal schedule (not knowing the events) would be something like:

D1: Time trial or rugby

D2: Mountain bike or fencing

D3: Mountain bike, gymnastics or archery

D4: Triathlon and/or rugby

D5: Triathlon or rowing

D6: Rowing, badminton, tennis and/or swimming

D7: BMX Racing

D8: Golf, Road Cycling (if it makes sense with the route), possibly archery

D9: Athletics, golf or road cycling

D10: Beach volley, badminton or athletics

D11: Track cyling, athletics and/or wrestling

D12: Athletics or track cycling

D13: Golf, track cycling or athletics

D14: Athletics, track cycling, golf or football

D15: Marathon, volleyball, table tennis or Canoe sprint

D16: Marathon, basketball, track cycling

Would be surprised if more than 5 days end up with the events mentioned, though.
