[OFF TOPIC] Russia-Ukraine War

Russia will never be satisfied because their ultimate goal is become a superpower again, but the war in Ukraine proved that Russia is way too powerless for those ambitions. They will eventually become a puppet state of China, so the current discussions should be between the West and China, not between the West and Russia. The fate of Ukraine and Russia will be decided based on what the US and China want. Russian propaganda says Ukraine is just a chess piece for the US and they fail to realize that Russia has also became a smaller piece in this game. And I think China will be very satisfied by a Russian defeat in this war if it will mean that they will have significant control over a weakened Russia and its resources. China can gain more with this conflict than the West/US, a fully victorious Ukraine is still less of a prize than Russia. And Russia will lose the most as they can become the lapdog of a nation that they have far less cultural connection with than with the West.

Politics put aside, all i see from 2014 is death of humanity and ethics, in all directions.

Whoever wins, humanity loses.

The best politics is to avoid the war at the very beginning instead of sacrifice a whole generation or ethnic to win. Actually this is no win of war, all war ends up with diplomatic agreement sooner or later, more deaths or less. All battles, deaths and control points shipments are merely oral bargaining chips on the table one day.

I don’t support Russians who started the hot war. But at this point, I just want it stop as soon as possible through diplomacy. Whoever advocates war something like we have to win is cruel and cold blooded as you don’t literally fight on court facing death at all time.

This is not the kind of war that ends until one side completely loses the ability to continue fighting.

You want to end it "diplomatically", but what many pro-Russian people mean by that is that they want the West to stop aiding Ukraine because they know the only way this war can conclude if Ukraine loses the ability to fight Russia. And they won't lose that ability if they are supported by NATO.

This war will only end if the Ukrainian army collapses once they run out of supplies or manpower or if Ukraine captures Crimea. There are no other alternatives because Ukraine won't give up any land.

Hungary did the same under MUCH harder conditions against the "entire world" in 1919-20. We lost that war, but we didn't stop until the Romanian army captured Budapest. And that was in a divided Hungary, right after World War 1 and after a bloody Soviet revolution and we still fought till we had anything left because we were defending our historical borders. Ukraine is in a better position, united under a stronger leadership and aided by the strongest military alliance in the world. They won't stop till they have anything left to fight.

The idea that they would agree to the Russian annexation of any of their land is ridiculous. Believe me, the people who would sign that treaty would forever be shamed and it would be historically seen as a much bigger national tragedy than the war itself. For Hungary the loss of our territory and the Trianon treaty has been seen as far bigger national tragedy than the loss of life during those times. Ukraine would view it the same way.

Once again it’s all because we are both not the one on the court facing bullets and missiles. We are the one typing on keyboard and restructuring world order based on our own geopolitical idealism. Yet people are continuously dying. From my point of view, maybe your death makes hero at this point, but 20 years 50 years later, no one remember s you except your beloved ones. And your sacrifice may even become a joke at that timing.

The people of Ukraine support their defensive war and the people of Russia support their "special military operation".

Regardless of how or why that is the case and regardless of how they will feel about it in the future, it's the simple truth. Ukraine and its people want to fight this fight so we help them, and Russia and its people want to fight this fight so their allies help them.

So I don't get this "it's easy for you to say that" narrative. I wouldn't support the war if the people of Ukraine would be against it. But they aren't. Most of those "pro-peace" people seemingly think that they know what's best for Ukraine (surrender), just like how Russia think they know what "best" for Ukraine (being neutral instead of being a NATO member state). Maybe what's best for Ukraine is what the people of Ukraine and its elected leadership think its best for the country. It's called self-determination, which is what Ukraine is fighting for in the past decade. And anything beyond that, like saying that they are "brainwashed by Western propaganda", just like what some said about the Hungarian freedom fighters in 1956, is deeply disrespectful to the Ukrainian people.

From what i read (not russian sources), parts of Ukrainian people are really into nazism, since ages. Bandera and so on. But its ok for the rest of the world, as whoever fights Russia is ok and ally.

Same thing in 1979, mujahedeens were western allies. Same ones who turned Afhganistan in failed state.

Something doesnt seem right :mumble:

Part of literally every Western allied nation is into nazism. We had a literal neonazi militia marching in Budapest during the late 2000s, supported by a party that got 17% of the popular vote during the 2010 Hungarian elections. Does it mean that a Russian invasion of Hungary would suddenly be okay or that Hungary is a nazi state?

Magyar gárda: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magyar_Gárda

Neonazi murders of Roma people in Hungary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008–2009_neo-Nazi_murders_of_Roma_in_Hungary

And guess what, it would still not be okay if Russia would suddenly attack us. To some extent every nation has these kind of people, some have more support and power, some have less. But ultimately what matters is that Ukraine isn't controlled by neonazis, just like how the far-right party never got majority support in Hungary. If you call Zelensky a far-right leader, you might as well call Orbán that as well.

Russia will never lose Crimea. If it comes to that, they'll just nuke Ukraine.

    • For Ghiotto to win 2 golds at the Olympics, he would have to be the second van der Poel or Sablikova in they pick of form. You have to be a genius to beat this whole coalition of Norwegians, Dutchmen etc. However, I don't see that much talent in him. I'd like to be wrong, but I'm afraid that he'll end up with some silver-bronze in the 10 km and that's it. If he starts losing to Eitrem now, who is 22 years old, it won't bode well for the future, and there's also Roest + maybe another Dutchman will jump out. Generally, our team is poorly prepared for this season and it's not like Ghiotto is on individual training on the moon and has just come down to earth and will now win everything while the rest of the team are in terrible form. Of course, the lack of form of Bosa or Trentini means e.g. 20th place, not 10th, but for Ghiotto it could mean 4/5 place, instead of 1st. It's the same with the team. For today, the only positive performance for us is Lollobrigida's 2nd place in the b category of the women's 1500 meters and Fontana's solid performance in the same event. The rest is terrible.

    • As far as I am concerned, there are two very simple problems: infrastructure and the lack of cooperation between sports federations. Let me explain. The MiCo2026 Olympics will provide virtually no legacy in ice sports, there is still a lack of an indoor hall, there is no federal centre that has been promised for so many years. It could have been an opportunity to make a nice roof in Baselga di Pinè, but instead they preferred to make temporary facilities in Rho.   The second problem is the total lack of cooperation between roller skating and speed skating, we have a huge pool and we are not exploiting it. Fortunately we are doing a few small collegiate events, the technical collaboration with the Netherlands absolutely must be exploited.   I am not so negative however about the current situation, Ghiotto practically on the 10k seems to be off the scale (watch out for the Czech and Norwegian) and he can medal in the 5k and drag the pursuit team. In the mass start you have more cards in both the men's and women's, let's see what Fontana does. And a Fontana-Peveri-Lollobrigida pursuit team can also play for a third place
    • Canada Team Size Prediction for Winter Olympic Games 2026 Milano Cortina   Ski Sports   Alpine Skiing  (13) - That's been the team size the last couple of Olympics so it's a safe bet again. Cross Country Skiing  (10) - Not too familiar with the qualification system. Probably around 6 men and 4 women. Ski Jumping  (5) - Loutitt, Strate and Maurer for sure on the women's side. Possibly a 4th will qualify. On the men's side, if Bowd-Clowes returns, then he should also qualify. Nordic Combined  (0) - Been a nonexistent sport for a while. No athletes competing in the World Cup or Continental Cup. Freestyle Skiing  (32) - Should qualify a team in mixed aerials which means a maximum team size of 32 athletes. Which athletes in which disciplines to be determined. Snowboarding  (24) - Full teams in slopestyle and big air. Then somewhere between 1-4 athletes in the other disciplines. Biathlon  (6) - Based on the Nations Cup last year, the men finished outside the top 20 and wouldn't qualify a relay team (and that's without Russia and Belarus). With Christian Gow's retirement, that makes things even more difficult. Women's relay should still qualify though. Ski Mountaineering  (1) - Gonna be optimistic here and say that one athlete will qualify either through the World Rankings or continental quota.     Skating Sports   Speed Skating  (16) - 7 to 8 men, 8 to 9 women. For now, I'll say 8 of each gender. Short Track Speed Skating  (10) - Full team size. With the current skill level of the team, anything else would be a tragedy. Figure Skating  (12) - Most likely 1 man (I hope) and 1 woman, then 2-3 pairs and 2-3 ice dance couples. For now, let's say 2 in pairs and 3 in ice dance.     Sleigh Sports   Luge  (7) - 2 women + 1 entry in each of the other disciplines Skeleton  (4) - 1 or 2 men + 2 or 3 women Bobsleigh  (14) - 2 men's crews (in both events) and 3 women's crews (in both events)     Team Sports   Curling  (12) - Full team or else you might as well burn the federation to the ground. Ice Hockey  (48) - Both men's and women's teams already qualified       Total Optimistic Prediction  -  (229) Total Pessimistic Prediction  - (184)   Total Realistic Prediction  -  (214)
    • Besides, I think Eitrem will be better than Ghiotto. You can see it after 1500 meters. He is younger. The whole Norwegian team is also in great shape. You just have to look at the team Norway has, how many new and young skaters there are and in our group A there is one Trentini, who takes last place. In every winter sport we invest too little money to be counted.   If Eitrem has the same form over long distances as he does over 1500 metres, he will dominate this season, not Ghiotto or Roest.
    • Looking at last season's 1st World Cup, it's worse for now and it should be the other way around. Bosa out of shape, Trentini weak. Both will drop to a lower group. It's similar to skeleton, i.e. regression instead of progress. I hope this doesn't mean Ghiotto is also in weaker form, because it could end up with 0 podiums this weekend.
    • In general, our picture for a little over 1 year until the home games looks like this:     - the women's sector is still based on one Lollo, who is 3 years older than 2022, - the women's and men's sprint sector is based on one Bosa and possibly the young Pergher (0% possobility for medal in 2026), - Ghiotto has made a lot of progress and that is a big plus. He could result to give our even 3 medals, including 1/2 gold. Our team's performance also depends to a large extent on Ghiotto's form, - the rest of the men's team is basically unchanged. There is Giovannoni in the mass start, there is Malfatti in the longer distances, but they are not competitors on the podium of a major event.   I will repeat myself: if Ghiotto continues to make such progress, we will probably win 3 medals, 2 of which gold and it will be a success. If something doesn`t work out, an injury, illness, etc. (we know from Vitozzi that this can happen to anyone), then it could be very bad. By the way, this also applies to other sports: the above-mentioned Vitozzi in biathlon, Goggia in downhill, Brignone in giant slalom, etc.
    • With the World Cup season in most of the winter sports about to begin and qualification in some sports already underway, I think it's about time for this thread.    Template    ...
