In my opinion Spain is the favourite but France's ceiling is slightly higher than Brazil's thanks to their individual quality. So with an optimal performance they have a good opportunity to win the tournament. On the other side, France has also a bigger chance to get knocked out quite early if you compare them to Brazil and Germany.

Joking aside, Iceland has no chance to make the last 8.

I'm all in for a new champion (Japan and Iceland are my sentimental favorites, as well as any team from Africa). But I voted for Brazil because I jinx every team I vote for, and I want Brazil to lose as soon as possible so people can forget about football and keep our focus on improving the political situation around here.

In my opinion there are four teams which are clearly above the rest (Brazil, Germany, Spain and France) and coincidentally these four teams are all place in the groups in a way that if they all win their group they will avoid each other until the semifinals. That means that the likelihood of an outsider going all the way to the semis due to very easy opponents (Uruguay 2010 says hello) is relatively low. Still I expect at least on of the four teams to fail earlier.

The 2nd tier of this tournament is relatively weak as Italy, Netherlands and Chile all would have been there had they qualified. Now I only have England, Belgium and Argentina in that 2nd group although I guess you could include Portugal, Croatia, Colombia and Uruguay in that group as well.

All in all Brazil are my favorites. I think they are more talanted than Germany and Spain while not having France's issue of not being a strong unity

So 5th World Cup for me... And will keep supporting DEUTSCHLAND!!!

But to be honest I don't really care about who will win anymore.. When they won in 2014, I didn't even celebrate lol.

If only Germany won in 2002/2006/2010, I can see myself partying like for 3 days straight.

Still not a single vote for :ARG That´s quite a shock for me :mumble: Now, I can not find the reason..Just a Classical Fearing of jinx :p or simply am I overestimating them so much as one of the top favorites ?

No, I think people just don’t see them winning, but more likely getting 2nd, 3rd, or 4th

    • Here's all the confirmed NHLers so far that I could find. Some big names are going. Once the 1st round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs is over, more names should be added    Canada Macklin Celebrini, F (San Jose Sharks) Travis Konecny, F (Philadelphia Flyers) Brandon Montour, D (Seattle Kraken) Ryan O'Reilly, F (Nashville Predators) Zayne Parekh, D (Calgary Flames) (only pre-tournament games are confirmed) Travis Sanheim, D (Philadelphia Flyers) Mackenzie Weegar, D (Calgary Flames)   Bo Horvat and Kent Johnson aren't confirmed but they are both willing to play if asked apparently. Sidney Crosby is considering.    Czechia Filip Hronek, D (Vancouver Canucks) Jakub Lauko, F (Boston Bruins) Karel Vejmelka, G (Utah Hockey Club) Dan Vladar, G (Calgary Flames)   David Pastrnak is possible    Finland Justus Annunen, G (Nashville Predators) Juuso Parssinen, F (New York Rangers) Juuse Saros, G (Nashville Predators) Teuvo Teravainen, F (Chicago Blackhawks) Eeli Tolvanen, F (Seattle Kraken)    Germany Philipp Grubauer, G (Seattle Kraken) Moritz Seider, D (Detroit Red Wings)    Sweden Rasmus Andersson, D (Calgary Flames) Mikael Backlund, F (Calgary Flames) Leo Carlsson, F (Anaheim Ducks) William Eklund, F (San Jose Sharks) Filip Forsberg, F (Nashville Predators) Adam Larsson, D (Seattle Kraken) Isac Lundestroem, F (Anaheim Ducks) Marcus Pettersson, D (Vancouver Canucks) Alexander Wennberg, F (San Jose Sharks)   Mika Zibanejad is also likely. • Regarding the swimming they have added the 800m for men and the 1500m for women so cutting numbers would be odd.
    • That quota I’ve been told by an athlete aiming to qualify who I know online.
    • Has the quota for Canada been offically confirmed anyway, or is that just a rumour? I can't find anything on google about it (nor the suggested quota for England's athletes someone posted earlier).   12 per gender would make sense (it's roughly what Canada sent to Birmingham). 12 overall seems dumb.
    • Some sports have qualification systems   3x3 basketball (wheelchair) Para-cycling Powerlifting Weightlifting
    • In the past few games, Canada (and other nations) was given an overall athlete quota which they then divided it through the various sports.
    • Whose decision was this, Team Canada's or the Organising committes?
    • I’ve been told there are no straight finals planned for the swimming.
    • I’m suprsied the games is still that big!
    • Actually now that I look at the numbers, it makes even less sense. Almost the entire reduction of 4800 athlete down to 3000 is explained by the removal of events. There's no reason to halve our swim team, considering we likely have the third strongest team
