Did anyone know if results from upcoming World Cup, which will be held in South Africa have any influence in Olympic qualifications? Either direct qualification or points to ranking or something or nothing?

Maybe it can influence in the teams choosen to participate at each continental event. Not sure about that, but it wouldn't be a huge influence in terms of the potential qualified teams.

Once the ranking will be used only for HSBC Sevens Series, and the final tournament will participate teams not yet qualified from continental tournaments.

Nope. 4 spots in the 2023 World Series, then one spot for each continent, then one spot at the final repechage tournament.

This time WR included the case where both USA and Canada qualified via the WS, in order to avoid a team like Mexico getting a free ticket, before it happened. Surprised they didn't foresee the possibility that Australia, NZ and Fiji did. If so I doubt they would award PNG a continental spot.

@rybak this window is probably the best for Poland to qualify (assuming they won't progress to an even better status in the coming years). France is automatically qualified, Russia excluded, Spain rebuilding. The only issue is that both Ireland and GB probably won't qualify through the WS.

Yeah, if anything this scenario is more likely than both Canada and USA finishing in the top 4. I imagine they will chance the rules to screw over PNG

It would be a spineless decision, but they do have a precedent...

Imo, rugby sevens is still facing growing pains which started immediately after the freshness of Rio expired, basically.

More so on the women's side. The depth is still pretty low and once you go through the top 12 or so teams the quality declines sharply. At least on the men's side we have depth teams. While I don't expect much from teams like :GER :HKG :TGA :UGA :URU they won't be completely embarrassed.

There is also the issue of three-day tournaments, which I don't think is all that great for any multi-sports games, in particular the Olympics. It just comes and goes amidst other action.

Paris scheduling is a novelty with the group stages starting before the Opening ceremony and the finals on the first days. I am pretty confident this was done to increase viewership more than anything else.

    • How wonderful!   I met the national rowing (and beach rowing) coach of EST/LTU/LAT on the way to ice hockey one day, who's Canadian by the way. I also flew home on the same flight as JC Schoonmaker's mom and friends, so we chatted for a bit.
    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
