Since nobody mentioned it yet, I must say that 47.53 from :CHN Pan Zhanle was pretty disappointing after his world record relay leadoff on night one. Some swimswam users were saying that it's because of all the big waves generated from the other swimmers slowing him down.

Either way, the 100m freestyle in Paris could be incredible. You could potentially have a final of :CHN Pan, :ROU Popovici, :AUS Chalmers, :USA Dressel, :USA Alexy, :FRA Grousset, :GBR Richards and :ITA Miressi.

Not sure the whole 0.73 difference can be attributed to waves. He said in Chinese media that he was feeling a lot of pressure before the final so that wouldn't have helped.

No, I meant cut the gendered versions in favor of the Mixed 4x100m Free. You could also cut the gendered 4x200m Free in favor of a Mixed 4x200m.

The Mixed 4x100m Medley needs to cut as well. The medley relays work better as gendered events.

The relays are too popular with viewers for them to be cut.

Douglass is playing around with pacing only to end up with basically the same result.

26.96 1:00.44 (33.48) 1:36.69 (36.25) 2:07.09 (30.40) 2023 Trials
27.28 1:01.17 (33.89) 1:37.34 (36.17) 2:07.17 (29.83) 2023 Worlds
26.81 1:00.04 (33.23) 1:36.84 (36.80) 2:07.05 (30.21) 2024 Worlds

In order to break the world record she'll basically need to combine the best splits from each race:

26.81 33.23 36.17 29.83 = 2:06.04 WR

Edit: McIntosh probably has a better chance to improve her breaststroke than Douglass her backstroke.

Wait, what? Is this the first time in history USA can't field a competitive women's 4x100 freestyle team? I genuinely don't remember them not being one of the main medal candidates :yikes: (I guess my memory is wrong, of course, but still)

They only brought seven women. Australia also didn't field a team in the men's 4x100 free despite being reigning World Champions.

Why are the American teams not there in both 4x100 freestyle relays?

Edit: the women, I meant, the men suddenly appeared (or, more likely, I had completely overlooked them :p)

They can't field a competitive team so it's a waste of energy for Douglass and Curzan who have large programs.

Don’t believe anyone has mentioned it here, but :HUN Kristof Milak started training a couple weeks ago!

@dullard @maestro @Topicmaster1010

It was reported at SwimSwam too. Would've been better if the media respected his wish to keeping a low profile but I guess that's not how the media works.

"Canadian swimming sensation Summer McIntosh has sent yet another shockwave across the swimming world by defeating American legend Katie Ledecky in the 800 metre freestyle.

McIntosh touched the wall in a national record time of 8:11.39, beating Ledecky's time of 8:17.12 – a nearly six second gap. Ledecky had not lost an 800m for more than 13 years.

That makes McIntosh the second-fastest performer ever in the 800m. Her time would have won gold at the Tokyo Olympics."

Wow. I hope she considers this race in Paris and drops either the 200 or 400

The choice is between the 200IM and 800FR.

After some talk last year at Fukuoka that she'll swim the 50 free and 100 free and even contemplating the 100 fly Sjostrom has said in the Swedish media that aside from relays she'll only be swimming the 50 free in Paris.

:ITA Gregorio Paltrinieri will not take part in the men's 10km race :yikes::cry:

he will be replaced by Dario Verani, world silver medallist and European champion over 25km (but a good specialist also in the 10km)

Paltrinieri will swim only the mixed relay in OWS (and the 1500m in the pool)

Swimswam are reporting that he's swimming the 5k. So who is right?
