Glad you're happier today, Quasit! 3-3-6 with hopefully a medal for Andrew Willis to add later tonight against 2-3-4 in London at the end of day 5. Starts getting a bit harder from tomorrow but I think we'll still be ahead of the game at the end of day 6. Apart from the medallists there were also good perfromances from the men's rugby 7s team - into the semi-finals - and the women's hockey team both of which maintained their 100% records.

Thanks, I can be quite pessimistic and emotional. :d

Yes, those teams look good too and one team sports medal would be amazing too since we have nothing in handball, volleyball, basketball etc.

Admittedly, today was GB's lucky day, after Froome I did not expect a gold today.

I understand where you are coming from but regretting that 4th and 5th places weren't turned into medals is the way to insanity, especially as the margins are so small. We are not going to win as many medals as 2012 and the main fall off will be in golds. We will see a fall off in some sports in numbers and/or colour but we will likely see an improvement in others, e.g. swimming, diving, shooting and possibly athletics.

Well, turned out to be the best day yet. :)

I gave Conway no chance and she has just won bronze. If not fencing, then judo. :d

This is all important for future funding, that's why.

  3. Day 5 Finals

    Canoeing (Slalom) - Men's K-1

    :GBR Joseph Clarke

After Florence's bad final run yesterday, I hope for a better performance from Clarke today. Medal contender, yes, but unpredictable event so I'll leave it at that.

Cycling - Women's Road Time Trial

    :GBR Emma Pooley

2008 silver medalist and 2010 world champion. No idea what to expect from her now after her comeback, favourites are others. Some give her a shot at a medal but I don't know enough about women's cycling, to be honest. Hoping for a good performance, of course.

Cycling - Men's Road Time Trial

    :GBR Chris Froome

    :GBR Geraint Thomas

Froome as one of the main favourites. I'll make this short: I'm hoping for him to be Wiggin's successor and win the gold.

    Diving - Men's Synchronised 3m Springboard

    :GBR Jack Laugher

    :GBR Chris Mears

This time a bit more optimistic about a podium finish. 2015 worlds bronze medalists and 2016 European champs so they don't have to fear any duo (except the Chinese, of course :d).

    Fencing - Women's Individual Foil

    no British participation

    Fencing - Men's Individual Sabre

    no British participation

    Gymnastics (Artistic) - Men's Individual All-Around

    :GBR Max Whitlock

    :GBR Nile Wilson

Wilson and Whitlock qualified as 5th and 12. If they can repeat that, it'd be a success. Their best chance is still half a week ahead of them.

    Judo - Women's -70kg

    :GBR Sally Conway

Miled :TUN, Émane :FRA and Bolder :ISR/Kim :KOR are her opponents in her bracket. She should win her first bout but Émane will be too strong for her.

    Judo - Men's -90kg

    no British participation

    Rowing - Women's Quadruple Sculls

    no British participation

    Rowing - Men's Quadruple Sculls

    :GBR Jack Beaumont

    :GBR Angus Groom

    :GBR Peter Lambert

    :GBR Sam Townsend

Not GB's strongest boat right now. I wouldn't dismiss their chances but I don't think they can go for a medal here. The goal is not finishing 6th then.

    Shooting - Men's 50m Pistol

    no British participation

    Shooting - Men's Double Trap

    :GBR Tim Kneale

    :GBR Steven Scott

Kneale has a chance if he can make it into the semis. Current vice-world champion in this event but I expect a very strong field here today.

    Swimming - Women's 200m Butterfly

    no British participation

    Swimming - Women's 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    :GBR Jazmin Carlin

    :GBR Georgia Coates

    :GBR Eleanor Faulkner

    :GBR Camilla Hattersley

Making it into the final is the minimum and then we'll see. Around 5th-7th, I'd say.

    Swimming - Men's 100m Freestyle

    :GBR Duncan Scott

Good work making it into the final here. 5th-8th is realistic.

    Swimming - Men's 200m Breaststroke

    :GBR Andrew Willis

Showed a very good performance in the semifinal and can go for a medal here. He will have to perform at his best though.

    Table Tennis - Women's Singles

    no British participation

    Weightlifting - Women's -69kg

    :GBR Rebekah Tiler

Starts in the B Group and improving on her personal best would be a success.

    Weightlifting - Men's -77kg

    no British participation

    optimistic shot on medals 6
    reasonable shot on medals 3
  4. Team GB medals after Day 4

    Rank Gold Silver Bronze Total
    11 1 3 2 6

After two bronzes, now two silver up. Guy finally with a good performance, helping the team to get silver and O'Connor was really close too. Swimming looks fine, so far.

Unfortunately, the third contender I had in mind (Florence in canoe slalom) couldn't do anything in the final.

As Nickyc707 pointed out, it formally things look better than in London (1-3-2 [6] now as opposed to 0-2-2 [4] in 2012).

I think you underestimated Daley & Goodfellow. Although they have only been together a year they have had regular top three finishes on the World Cup circuit and were one of the favourites for a medal. By contrast James Guy has been a bit below last year's  form throughout 2016, so was always going to find it difficult to repeat last year's individual performances.

So far GB stand at 1-3-2 compared with 0-2-2 after four days in London. We may not get 6 golds in a day like 2012 but then realistically we were never going to get 65 medals this time, but something closer to 50. This is still very much achievable so don't be too pessimistic so early on.

Maybe I did underestimate them but mainly because I expected more from Mexico, hence why I wouldn't have been disappointed with 4th place.

Guy on the other hand showed he can go sub 1:45 last night. Adding everything together (200m ind. + relay), only Haas (1:44,14) and Sun (winning time in 200m of 1:44,65) were faster. It could have been bronze so I stick with what I've said, he disappointed in the individual final.

You're right but I have hoped for medals from as many different sports as possible. In fencing, Kruse has that amazing opportunity. In the team, I don't know. They will face Russia in the QF and in my opinion, the women's rugby sevens team has a better shot than the men but let's see.

Of course we will have to wait for the flagship events (rowing, track cycling, sailing) but I don't think the many golds in track cycling and athletics will be repeated, which is why especially golds have to come from elsewhere too to compensate.

    Silva :hearts:

And I'm not a fan of Van Emden with her excuses of thinking a refused doping test would count as a missed test and stuff :p

Not like I hate her or anything, I just would have preferred Silva in this match, but this is fine.

    Ah okay. :d

Good results for Slovenia and Israel.

Maybe you were going to earlier and decided not to,going to the main site or so again. If you want to post again in the same topic, it saved what you were going to say before (or quoted). Happened to me before. If you're not going to reply what you quoted/wrote, delete what you did. :d

I agree that holding the Olympics in Brazil was a bad idea.

QF 1 of the Rowing is :UZB:INA:NOR:CUB:AUS:KOR

    Those big rowing nations

So because of this rowing QF match-up holding the games in Brazil was a bad idea? I agree on the venue but certainly not on Brazil.

Also, other nations catch up, in rowing too, wouldn't you say?

  9. Day 4 Finals

    Canoeing (Slalom) - Men's C-1

    :GBR David Florence

He and the others were pretty confident to skip the second qualification race, with the exception of Clarke in K-1 who needed that second run, so today is the day of truth. He will have to go through the semis first before the final. If he does what he did in the qualification, we can hope for a medal.

    Diving - Women's Synchronised 10m Platform

    :GBR Tonia Couch

    :GBR Lois Toulson

Favourites are others, so I'll stick with what I said yesterday, 4th-5th would be good.

    Equestrian - Individual Eventing

    :GBR William Fox-Pitt

    :GBR Pippa Funnell

    :GBR Kitty King

    :GBR Gemma Tattersall

After Fox-Pitt blew it in the cross country, no chance.

    Equestrian - Team Eventing

    :GBR William Fox-Pitt

    :GBR Pippa Funnell

    :GBR Kitty King

    :GBR Gemma Tattersall

    Again, forget it.

Note: I'm no expert in this sport, I don't even watch it. I go by distances in current standings.

    Fencing - Men's Individual Épée

    no British participation

    Gymnastics (Artistic) - Women's Team All-Around

    :GBR Becky Downie

    :GBR Ellie Downie

    :GBR Claudia Fragapane

    :GBR Ruby Harrold

    :GBR Amy Tinkler

Nominally, this one should be between :USA, :RUS, and :CHN but they can be 4th again like in the qualification so if any of those big three makes a huge mistake, they might sneak in. Not likely though, confirming 4th would be good.

    Judo - Women's -63kg

    :GBR Alice Schlesinger

Since competing for GB I don't think she's won something big internationally. In her draw she will most likely face Bak :KOR, van Emden :NED and Agbegnenou :FRA. I see the French as the favourite in her draw but she might very well struggle against van Emden. She should at least beat Bak.

    Judo - Men's -81kg

    no British participation

    Shooting - Women's 25m Pistol

    no British participation

    Swimming - Women's 200m Freestyle

    no British participation

    Swimming - Women's 200m Individual Medley

    :GBR Siobhan-Marie O'Connor

Her time in the semis was superb. Hosszu will probably be too strong for the rest again but O'Connor has a chance for silver though. Gotta watch Ye :CHN and Coutts :AUS.

    Swimming - Men's 200m Butterfly

    no British participation

    Swimming - Men's 4x200m Freestyle Relay

    :GBR James Guy

    :GBR Cameron Kurle

    :GBR Ieuan Lloyd

    :GBR Stephen Milne

    :GBR Robbie Renwick

    :GBR Duncan Scott

    :GBR Daniel Wallace

Definitely a medal contender and the main competitor against the USA, if we go according to qualfying times. Good chance and Guy should finally grasp it.

    Weightlifting - Women's -63kg

    no British participation

    Weightlifting - Men's -69kg

    no British participation

    optimistic shot on medals 3
    reasonable shot on medals 2
  10. Team GB medals after Day 3

    Rank Gold Silver Bronze Total
    10 1 1 2 4

Instead of the women's rugby sevens team and James Guy it was the duo Daley/Goodfellow and Edward Ling winning the bronzes. The optimistic guess was definitely possible. At least the minimum of expectations has been satisfied but I'm really disappointed with James Guy.

Good prediction, but 6 4th place finishes over the first 3 days in Men's 400 IM, Women's 400 IM, rugby, gymnastics, fencing, 200 freestyle is a little worrying, but we are one medal up on London 2012!

I would have had medal-winning performances wrong though. I was more certain Guy would win a medal rather than Daley/Goodfellow, so yes, others have to step in and make up for other losses. GB usually starts slow but I doubt something like 6 golds in one day like that saturday in London will happen again. We need those solid performances in track cycling, rowing and sailing for 4th place again but most importantly, as many medals as possible or funding will be cut. So far the £347 million haven't been worth it but we will see in the end.  The main goal will be unachievable with recent chokes already, some boxers are out already too, Murray brothers in doubles, men's field hockey won't even qualify for the QF etc.

Litchfield's 4th place is a good thing actually, I never expected him to finish 4th. He did the best he could. The women's rugby sevens team created hopes thanks to the group stage win over Canada but in the end, they were the better team to begin with. A fencing medal would have done good for the future. So far, it's all about men's foil and an individual medal was probably "easier" to achieve than the team medal, in my opinion.

  12. Another choke, this time by Guy.

Also disappointed with the Australians, I can understand Syd's frustration here. Backstroke was supposed to be one of their success stories this time. Oh well.

Sadly, I felt the 100m breast was going to be anticlimactic. :LTU, :ISL, :JAM all off the podium.
