  1. Well, that wasn't too hard to predict that athletes from countries like Yemen or Djibouti losing their Judo bouts in about 10 seconds...
  2. I hope no Italian here is watching Swimming because according to the commentators, Thomas "catch-on" (Ceccon) was underway.
  3. Actually, he was very lucky because his side of the bracket only had Grenada (Semifinal). The other half of the bracket had Puerto Rico, Russia, Egypt and Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, less "exotic" nations have qualified for Nanjing and now as well.
  4. It wasn't any different in Singapore and Nanjing.
  5. Yes, but chances are we will see a distorted medal table if we have and in some sports and in others. Having for any entity winning medals is annoying enough as it is.
  6. If we consider Japan a lock for the team gold, then only 3 individual golds would be very disappointing for them.
  7. Yes, which is why GB is the worst of the "big" teams to allow such a performance (1996) to happen. Wouldn't happen to Russia, USA, China etc. and the trend can easily go on a downwards spiral again because everything is based on funding and target performances as the base for funding for the next Olympic cycle. If for example rowing remains in the state it is now in Tokyo, I don't think it's going to be a good sign. For a flagship sport no less. Then again, GB has the tendency of not taking (certain) world championships very seriously, which is annoying me. Also for wrestling, GB had some kind of history in Freestyle at least but as with many sports (Water Polo comes to mind), they let interest slip a bit ages ago. It's not just wrestling, GB is also non-existent in Volleyball, Handball, to an extend Basketball and Water Polo. So, team sports. There's just no interest in certain sports.. at all. Italy on the other hand is at least present everywhere and can surprise on a good day. I can't think of a sport where Italy has no interest in. Perhaps Table Tennis and Badminton are Italy's worst (Olympic) sports.
  8. At least Italy has had some decent results in recent years, mainly thanks to Chamizo, while GB doesn't even have any WC participants in a sport with 18 Olympic classes.
  9. What's with him?
  10. That wouldn't be half as interesting as if a heavyweight wrestler or weightlifter achieved that.
  11. I know Desgranges failed early but whatever happened to Sean McColl?
  12. If Italy's performance was a disaster, the GB's was abysmal. Which it actually was.
  13. What is Target Sprint?
  14. The knock-off system in jumping and throwing event was unfair. For example Vadlejch's best would have been enough for 2nd place (ranked 5th) or Perkovic would have won with her best score. Why was that necessary? To have one from each continent among the best 4? They didn't have that in running events. Most points possible (15) for the Americas in Men's 3,000m, for example.
  15. I'm not a regular watcher of this sport yet but that semifinal route looks even more ridiculous than the women's one last night. Ghisolfi not even making the final, Ondra barely in...
  16. And first ever for Guatemala, as far as I can see.
  17. And for the moment the only team with 6 points from two matches is ... Mauritania. CAF is like the WTA of Football.
  18. That route looks very difficult... Garnbret should have won, what time she wasted.
  19. "Alipour" is enough.
  20. Haha, of course I meant C-2.
  21. Well, of course I'm no expert but FEI describes Dressage as "ultimate expression of horse training and elegance". I could have put "artistic" in quotes but wouldn't you see Dressage as a form of performing art and thus make it literally speaking artistic? I treated Eventing the same in my list because Dressage is part of it.
  22. My dream programme is not realistic since I'm all about adding more sports and events, but in a balanced way. I don't mind mixed events, especially if a sport doesn't justify two separate team events, like in Triathlon for example. I also don't care about limiting athletes due to costs but there will be tons of events in my programme so there will be cuts. Also, some pure team sports would be just fine with just 8-12 teams participating. I'm not trying to equalise between men's and women's events too much where I don't see the necessity. There are women-only sports in the programme but then there will be sports with more men's events. Aquatics - Diving [11] +3 3m Springboard (m/w) 10m Platform (m/w) Synchronised 3m Springboard (m/w) Synchronised 10m Platform (m/w) Mixed Team (mixed) High Diving (m/w) I'll go with a mixed team event here (one Springboard and one Platform athlete). High Diving as well because it's a different from indoor diving and already well-established. Also more changes for non-Chinese. No need for 1m Springboard, in my opinion. Aquatics - Swimming [33] -4 50m Freestyle (m/w) 100m Freestyle (m/w) 200m Freestyle (m/w) 400m Freestyle (m/w) 800m Freestyle (m/w) 1500m Freestyle (m/w) 4x100m Freestyle Relay (m/w) 4x200m Freestyle Relay (m/w) 100m Breaststroke (m/w) 200m Breaststroke (m/w) 100m Butterfly (m/w) 200m Butterfly (m/w) 100m Backstroke (m/w) 200m Backstroke (m/w) 200m Individual Medley (m/w) 400m Individual Medley (m/w) 4x100m Medley Relay (m/w/mixed) 10km Open Water (m/w) 4x5km Open Water (mixed) I might add a Mixed Freestyle event somewhere later but Mixed Medley is just nonsense. Also, 200m IM and 4x200m have to go, I need room for something else that involves swimming later. Swimming is not too competitive between nations anyway. Open Water gets a team event. Aquatics - Synchronised Swimming [2] ±0 Women's Duet (w) Women's Team (w) I'll let it pass... but maybe Singles instead of Duet. Don't care too much anyway. Aquatics - Water Polo [2] ±0 Tournament (m/w) Archery [8] +3 Individual Recurve (m/w) Team Recurve (m/w/mixed) Individual Compound (m/w) Team Compound (m/w) Compound events are added, no mixed needed in this sport, in my opinion. Athletics [49] +1 100m (m/w) 200m (m/w) 400m (m/w) 800m (m/w) 1500m (m/w) 5000m (m/w) 10,000m (m/w) 110m/100m Hurdles (m/w) 400m Hurdles (m/w) 3000m Steeplechase (m/w) 4x100m Relay (m/w) 4x400m Relay (m/w/mixed) Marathon (m/w) 20km Race Walk (m/w) 50km Race Walk (m/w) Long Jump (m/w) Triple Jump (m/w) High Jump (m/w) Pole Vault (m/w) Shot Put (m/w) Discus Throw (m/w) Javelin Throw (m/w) Hammer Throw (m/w) Heptathlon (w) Decathlon (m) I'm not desperately trying to make it up to 50 events. Athletics is fine the way it is, the only event added is Women's 50km Race Walk. Badminton [5] ±0 Singles (m/w) Doubles (m/w/mixed) Baseball [1] ±0 Tournament (m) Increased to 8 teams. Basketball [2] -2 3x3 Tournament (m/w) Tournament (m/w) Watched 3x3 recently, don't like it. Boxing [13] ±0 8 Men's weights 5 Women's weights Canoeing - Slalom [6] +2 K-1 (m/w) C-1 (m/w) C-2 (m) Team Relay (mixed) Men's K-2 has to return (hello, hckosice) and this sport also deserves a team event. How about a mixed team event with 1 K-1 and 1 C-1 athlete for each gender? Canoeing - Sprint [12] ±0 K-1 200m (m/w) K-1 500m (w) K-1 1000m (m) K-2 500m (w) K-2 1000m (m) K-4 500m (m/w) K-4 1000m (m) C-1 200m (w) C-1 1000m (m) C-2 500m (w) C-2 1000m (m) Men's K-4 should be of 1000m distance but the programme still looks weird. Maybe I will change something here later. I won't go above 12 events though. Cycling - BMX [4] ±0 BMX Race (m/w) Park (m/w) Cycling - Mountain Bike [4] +2 Men's/Women's Race (m/w) Downhill (m/w) BMX has a freestyle event, Road Cycling has a time trial and MTB Cycling will get the Downhill event added to the programme. Cycling - Road [4] ±0 Road Race (m/w) Time Trial (m/w) Cycling - Track [14] +2 500m Time Trial (w) 1,000m Time Trial (m) Individual Sprint (m/w) Team Sprint (m/w) Team Pursuit (m/w) Keirin (m/w) Points Race (m/w) Omnium (m/w) Madison (m/w) I don't like Keirin, so it's going to be replaced by the Time Trials; Points Race returns as a single event. The Omnium goes back being what it should be, an overall discipline containing a good mix of sprint and endurance events. It should also feature all the non-Olympic disciplines like Individual Pursuit, Scratch, Elimination, Flying Lap and the Keirin can be a part of Omnium too. Equestrian [4] -2 Individual Dressage (mixed) Team Dressage (mixed) Individual Jumping (mixed) Team Jumping (mixed) Individual Eventing (mixed) Team Eventing (mixed) Individual Endurance (mixed) Team Endurance (mixed) My biggest issue is this sport. Personally, I would have it out altogether but the thing is, we still have Jumping as part of Modern Pentathlon and that will stay. So it would not make sense to have riding events just as part of MP. I don't like Dressage, I never watch it. However, just having 2 events is not enough for this sport to stay in either. So I'm going to add Endurance and take out everything else that is artistic. The other option I have is taking out Equestrian as a whole and either go for a "Tetrathlon" or choose something else for the jumping part in MP. Fencing [12] ±0 Individual Foil (m/w) Team Foil (m/w) Individual Épée (m/w) Team Épée (m/w) Individual Sabre (m/w) Team Sabre (m/w) Field Hockey [2] ±0 Tournament (m/w) Football [2] ±0 U-23 Tournament (m/w) The U-23 rule is dropped. That doesn't automatically mean the best of each team will be playing but at least the tournament won't be limited to 3 non-U 23 players anymore. Golf [4] +2 Individual Stroke Play (m/w) Team Match Play (m/w) Foursome Match Play is added as a team event. 8 teams per gender. Gymnastics - Artistic [14] ±0 Individual All-Around (m/w) Team All-Around (m/w) Floor (m/w) Vault (m/w) Pommel Horse (m) Rings (m) Parallel Bars (m) Horizontal Bar (m) Balance Beam (w) Uneven Bars (w) Gymnastics - Rhythmic [2] ±0 Individual All-Around (w) Group All-Around (w) Gymnastics - Trampoline [4] +2 Individual (m/w) Tumbling (m/w) Double Mini and Synchronised are nice too but we can't have everything. Handball [2] ±0 Tournament (m/w) Judo [14] -1 7 Men's weights 7 women's weights Team Event (mixed) Something has to be cut... so no team events in combat sports. Karate [8] ±0 4 Men's Kumite weights 4 Women's Kumite weights Individual Kata (m/w) Kata will have to make room for Wushu later. Modern Pentathlon [3] +1 Individual (m/w) Mixed Team Relay (mixed) Of course a team event is added here as well. Rowing [12] -2 Single Sculls (m/w) Double Sculls (m/w) Lightweight Double Sculls (m/w) Quadruple Sculls (m/w) Pairs (m/w) Fours (m/w) Eights (m/w) I have nothing against Lightweight Rowing. I would even add Lightweight Singles but again we have to drop something. Rugby Sevens [2] ±0 Tournament (m/w) Sailing [10] ±0 RS:X (m/w) Laser (m) Laser Radial (w) Finn (m) 470 (m/w) 49er (m) 49er FX (w) Nacra 17 (mixed) I don't know enough about Sailing but I've noticed the absence of keelboats. Debating if Star and Yngling would replace Finn and Nacra 17. At any rate, no more than 10 events. Shooting [15] ±0 10m Air Rifle (m/w) Mixed Team 10m Air Rifle (mixed) 50m Rifle Three Positions (m/w) 300m Rifle Prone (m) 10m Air Pistol (m/w) Mixed Team 10m Air Pistol (mixed) 25m Pistol (w) 25m Rapid Fire Pistol (m) 50m Pistol (m) Trap (m/w) Double Trap (m) Mixed Team Trap (mixed) Skeet (m/w) 50m Pistol and Double Trap will stay in my book and I'd also like to see 300m Rifle. We're going with Prone here. As 15 events should suffice, those events will be men-only. Essentially the way it was before, just 300m Rifle Prone instead of 50m. Skateboarding [4] ±0 Park (m/w) Street (m/w) Softball [1] ±0 Tournament (w) Sport Climbing [4] +2 Combined (m/w) Speed (m/w) Lead (m/w) There should be a proper event for Speed and Lead instead of that combined idea. Surfing [2] ±0 Shortboard (m/w) Table Tennis [5] ±0 Singles (m/w) Doubles (m/w/mixed) Team (m/w) As long as there are doubles events, there's no need for additional team events. Taekwondo [10] +2 5 Men's weights 5 Women's weights This sport is popular enough for there being another weight class. Tennis [5] ±0 Singles (m/w) Doubles (m/w/mixed) Triathlon [3] ±0 Individual Race (m/w) Mixed Team Relay (mixed) Volleyball - Beach [2] ±0 Tournament (m/w) Down to 16 teams and one team per NOC. Volleyball - Indoor [2] ±0 Tournament (m/w) Weightlifting [14] ±0 7 Men's weights 7 Women's weights Wrestling [18] ±0 6 Men's Freestyle weights 6 Men's Greco-Roman weights 6 Women's Freestyle weights Maybe even down to 15 (5 per category). Additional Sports [10; 44 Events] Now comes the more interesting part... Cricket Twenty-20 [2] -> Tournament (m/w) Cue Sports [4] -> Snooker (m); Six-red Snooker (w); Nine-ball Pool (m/w) Finswimming [4] -> 100m Surface (m/w); 400m Surface (m/w) Futsal [2] -> Tournament (m/w) - 8 teams Jiu-jitsu [6] -> 3 Men's Ne-Waza weights; 3 Women's Ne-Waza weights Kickboxing [7] -> 4 Men's K-1 rules weights; 3 Women's K-1 rules weights Rafting [2] -> Downriver (m/w) Roller Sports [5] -> 500m Sprint (m/w); 20,000m Elimination (m/w); Artistic Pairs (mixed) Squash [4] -> Singles (m/w); Doubles (m/w) Wushu (Taolu) [8] -> Changquan (m/w); Taijiquan+Taijijian (m/w); Nanquan+Nangun (m); Nanquan+Nandao (w); Daoshu+Gunshu (m); Jianshu+Qiangshu (w) That's it for the moment but knowing me, there will more changes. Total medel events: 394 in 43 sports Total athletes: --- Days of competition: 19 (including Day -2, Day -1 and Day 0 before the Opening Ceremony)
  23. Even more, until now I didn't even realise there are only going to be 4 teams in those mixed events. They axed 50m Pistol and Double Trap for that? That said, Romania, Spain and Serbia had the chance and they wasted it. Countries like China and Russia are always strong when it matters most.
  24. And of course North America, but it depends on what games. USA is good at various fighting games, for example. Not sure why they didn't include any fighting games as demonstration events here.
  25. Yes. I just said that knowing most people here don't care about it. (or are probably afraid ) That said, me liking video games and the competition, I don't want eSports to become part of the Olympic programme. It just wouldn't fit, same with board and card games. While perfectly fine on continental games, in my opinion there should be a separate Olympic tournament for all mind sports and eSports. It could be labeled as something with "indoor" and be held in autumn.
