Leuk voor het - voor mij ook onbekende - Nederlandse team. Vooral mooi hoe Silke Holkenborg heel brutaal aan Katinka Hosszu voorbij zwom. En een mooie 1.56,26 als split voor Marrit Steenbergen: de snelste van het hele veld.

Goede resultaten van vooral Visser op brug (14.266) en vloer (13.633). Dat lijken twee finales voor haar te worden. Op beide toestellen staat ze eerste na 3 van de 4 subdivisies. Het Nederlands team staat tweede na 3 van de 4 subdivisies, dus ook die finale lijkt wel binnen. Voor Volleman (nu 4e op vloer) wordt het spannend. In de laatste subdivisie zitten de sterke turnsters van Italië, GB, Frankrijk en België, dus haar score van 13.000 is vermoedelijk niet genoeg. Al met al goede resultaten, die ik niet had verwacht.

Het Nederlandse roeien zit al jaren in de lift, met als absolute hoogtepunt natuurlijk de gouden Olympische medaille in de dubbelvier bij de mannen. Ik vraag me trouwens wel af waar Tone Wieten en Koen Metsemakers zijn gebleven. Van Dirk Uittenbogaard was bekend dat hij zou stoppen en Abe Wiersma zit nu in de Acht. Op dit EK vind ik de teamsamenstellingen opvallend. De tweetjes bij de dames zijn weliswaar heel sterk, maar hebben vooral uit GB, Roemenië en Griekenland (!) enorme concurrentie. Zeker de Roemeense ploegen zijn praktisch onklopbaar. Waarom zijn de beste Nederlandse roeisters niet bij elkaar gezet in de dubbelvier of de vier-zonder (waar op de OS nog bijna goud werd gepakt en waar er uiteindelijk meer kans op succes lijkt)? De bondscoach zal het wel weten :-). Karolien Florijn gooit hoge ogen in de skiff, maar ook daar zijn een Grieks megatalent en een Duits megatalent waar ze de komende jaren een zware kluif aan gaat krijgen. Heel benieuwd hoe (hoog) de medaille-oogst uit gaat pakken. Mijn inschatting is dat er veel zilver en brons gewonnen zal worden.

Naomi Visser en Sanna Veerman zouden op brug toch mee moeten kunnen doen om een finaleplaats. Ze hebben beiden hun oefening moeilijker gemaakt, het is hun beste toestel en een aantal toppers (de Russinnen, Nina Derwael) doet niet mee.

Ik hoorde Sarina Wiegman een paar weken terug al over de OS met Engeland spreken, dus Engeland cq Groot-Brittannië zal echt wel meedoen om een Olympisch ticket. Op het EK heb ik eigenlijk weinig aanknopingspunten gezien om te veronderstellen dat Nederland in die strijd een rol gaat spelen. Het niveau van het merendeel van de speelsters is in vergelijking met veel andere landen momenteel niet goed genoeg (meer). Mijn gok voor de twee Olympische tickets zouden GB en Spanje zijn.

Ook een springfout voor Harrie Smolders. De concurrentie maakt in de laatste ronde minder fouten, dus NL lijkt uit te komen rond plek 8/9 na de eerste dag. Toch wel een behoorlijke achterstand op het podium. Met 1 springfout minder had het er allemaal een stuk rooskleuriger uitgezien voor Olympische kwalificatie.

Helaas een 86.74 (1 springfout) voor Sanne Thijssen. Nederland na drie van de vier rijders ver verwijderd van de top 5. Misschien dat een 0-ronde van de laatste combinatie (en het schrappen van de score van Jur Vrieling) helpt om in elk geval richting top 10 te geraken. Wat is België goed bezig zeg! Die hebben de laatste jaren vaker hele goede ruiters, maar nu hebben ze echt een topteam.

Dan zullen de 3 andere Nederlandse ruiters een goede rit moeten rijden, want Jur Vrieling geeft niet thuis. Traag gereden en ook nog een springfout. Nog vier landen moeten hun eerste combinatie de ring insturen en Nederland staat nu al 13e.

Femke Bol gaat in elk geval voor 3x goud. Leuk dat ze het een keer probeert: als het ergens een keer kan, is het op dit EK. Uiteindelijk hoeft ze 'maar' vijf keer te lopen (zij liever dan ik :-)). De 400 meter vlak wordt close met de Poolse concurrentes, de 400 horden zou 'easy' moeten zijn en de 4x400 meter hangt vooral af van de vorm van de derde en vierde loopster (ik vermoed Lisanne de Witte en Eveline Saalberg). Verder ben ik erg benieuwd naar Jorinde van Klinken. Zij leek toch altijd een groter talent te zijn dan Jessica Schilder, dus als ze dat ook op seniorenniveau gaat bewijzen, gaan er mooie dingen volgen. Op de marathon heeft Nienke Brinkman by far de snelste tijd staan, maar wat mij betreft zegt dat ook weer niet zó veel. Tot slot ben ik ook benieuwd of Anouk Vetter wéér een goede meerkamp kan afleveren. Zij is de laatste jaren wel lekker steady geworden. Oh ... en een medaille voor Tony van Diepen zou fantastisch zijn!

Nice predictions, but I don't see the 4x400 men winning gold. They are all just a little less good than last year (mainly Ramsey Angela and Terrence Agard) and especially Belgium has a very strong team. Jorinde van Klinken winning a medal would be a very nice surprise!

No idea why the two best Dutch riders Gal and Minderhoud are not participating in this World Cup. Tomorrow two riders that I have never heard of will start. That doesn't bode well. I don't think the Netherlands will even make it to the top 6.

Hassan won't compete in Munich. Unfortunately :-(

Where did Hassan's final sprint suddenly come from? Two weeks late, but good for her to know she can still do it! NR for Bol in the 400 flat. Curious which distance she chooses at the European Championships. And a very nice NR for Schilder in women's shot put: 19.81. It's only centimeters every time, but she gets better every time.

Men's horizontal bar: Epke Zonderland is by far the most spectacular gymnast on the horizontal bar of all time. If only he had won more Olympic golds. He deserved it.

Netherlands doing well in every sport? Well, we are pretty good in speedskating, but every sport? For me it's the other way around ... it feels like Canada is good at all sports.

Wtf Only 2 tickets for European countries in the women's football tournament? With 6 of the top 8 teams in the current World Ranking and at least 3 of them missing the Games, the women's Olympic football tournament can not be taken seriously.

One of the most inspiring Olympic moments for the Netherlands : Pieter van den Hoogenband winning the 200 freestyle in Sydney against Ian Thorpe, swimming for his home fans.

If you choose sports that are held in Paris Zone, it is best to visit two sessions per day. Three sessions a day is hardly doable, unless it includes an event being held in the city (free!). For the team matches, the draw and layout of the matches is important, so it is very difficult to plan that now. Keep in mind that track cycling and handball take place quite far outside Paris. Handball even in Lille. Don't ask me why. If you're going to the velodrome for a day, I wouldn't plan anything else. But judo and swimming, for example, can easily be combined in 1 day. And I recommend beach volleyball. Seems so magical to the Eiffel Tower. And always good atmosphere! I have provisionally chosen to go in the first weekend, because of the opening ceremony. But it can also just be the second week. The disadvantage is that you miss a lot of the other sports when you are there. As a sports fanatic I don't like that. But the Olympic atmospere is so nice. I can recommend it to you.

Ah superleuk! Ik heb kaarten voor de eerste wedstrijd van NL in de tweede ronde (vermoedelijk tegen China, Brazilië of Japan, dus prima). Rotterdam is voor mij een stuk makkelijker bereikbaar dan Arnhem. Dat is dan ook meteen het argument om niet naar de FBK Games te gaan. Jammer, want nu de atletiek in Nederland zó in de lift zit, is dat een heerlijke atletiekdag om live bij te zijn. Wel kaartjes gekocht voor het WK hockey in Amstelveen, - . Super dat we weer wat live mee kunnen maken!

I have started planning a trip to Paris in 2024. Handball will start in Lille on Thursday 25 July, and I will drive there by car. After the matches I want to go to Paris by train. Friday 26 July I hope to see something of the opening ceremony. Then I stay for 3 days in Paris to watch sports. My programme will look like something like this: Saturday 27 July 11.00-12.00 diving (synchron) 14.30-18.30 time trial cycling 21.00-00.00 beach volleybal - amazing with the Eiffel Tower view, really looking forward to it Sunday 28 July 10.30-18.00 some field hockey matches (hopefully Netherlands) 20.30-22.30 swimming finals (hopefully with some Dutch swimmers) Monday 29 July 14.00-16.00 waterpolo women 17.30-20.30 gymnastics team final men Unfortunately, it is still difficult to plan because of course little is known about the sessions and participation of Dutch athletes. It is also possible that I go other days, but this seemed like a nice program. Although I would also like to see judo, 3x3 basketball and athletics. Does anyone already knows about ticket sales and hotels?

Draw for the Women's European Championships 2022: Groep A (Ljubljana): Noorwegen, Hongarije, Kroatië , Zwitserland. Groep B (Celje): Denemarken, Zweden, Slovenië, Servië. Groep C (Skopje): Frankrijk, Nederland, Noord-Macedonië, Roemenië. Groep D (Podgorica): Polen, Montenegro, Duitsland, Spanje. Very balanced draw. The ECh are an important tournament for the Olympic qualification. Winners will qualify for Paris, other countries may qualify for one of the three qualification tournaments (depending the results of 2023 World Championships).

I'n really curious about Mathieu van der Poel too, but do we already know the parcours of the road races? I presume the finish will be at the Champs Elysées, but that's the only thing I can find about it.

Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004: those were the days! Pieter van den Hoogenband and Inge de Bruijn: I will never forget their achievements. I was 17 years old at the time and got so much inspiration from these two athletes. Pieter who defeated Ian Thorpe and Inge with all her world records after years in seclusion with her US-trainer.

A very early prediction. There were 288 Dutch athletes in Tokyo, I expect around 220 in Paris. The women's football players are not going to make it to the World Cup (and therefore not the OG) and the handball women are not so good anymore. The Netherlands will also qualify fewer athletes in swimming, sailing and rowing. Then the results. At the moment I only expect medals for the track cyclists, hockey teams and some athletes. The number of medals won in Tokyo (10-10-12) is not improved.
