Track Cycling Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Recommended Posts

I guess they probably wanted to allow team pursuit nations to enter someone different for the omnium (of course, only if they are in top 12/13).

Why not say it like that then?  I thought that was the case, but was curious whether others agreed or not.  I was trying to work out how they got to a maximum of 8 men/7 women, so this also supports Team Pursuit x 4 plus Team Sprint x 3/2 plus Omnium x 1.  Anyway, the end of 2018/19 season rankings should be coming out in the next day or so incorporating the 2019 WChamps, so we will be halfway there now.

In the Olympic ranking in the world championship the points assigned are twice what it should be according to the reglament,Page 52 .https://www.uci.org/docs/default-source/rules-and-regulations/part-iii--track-races.pdf?sfvrsn=da11c58e_14   Why?

Looks like they decided to double the World Championships points for the Olympic Ranking:

3. Ranking Calculation

Each UCI Track Olympic Ranking includes results of the following qualification events: - The last two (2) editions of each Elite Continental Championships - The best three (3) UCI Track Cycling World Cup results of each season 2018-2019 and 2019- 2020 (with at least one result outside of the nation’s continent per season) - The 2019 and 2020 UCI Elite Track Cycling World Championships

The UCI Track Olympic Ranking is based on the UCI points scales as per art. 3.3.010, with the exception of World Championships for which the points scales are doubled.

@JoshMartini007 Have I interpreted the qualification document right? If so, is it possible for a nation who qualified a road athlete to also enter them in a track event? Theoretically Algeria wants to compete in the sprint, could they?

Yes, but only if they already qualified a quota to compete in the event. So in theory Algeria could win the continental quota in the individual sprint and then use their road athlete to compete in the keirin (since all nations which qualified in individual sprint will be allowed to compete in the keirin).

Of course, nations tend to use that transferable athlete quota in the endurance events, for example using five athletes instead of four across the team pursuit and Madison events or three athletes instead of two between the Madison and Omnium.

Ok, so it’s not like the Pan Am’s where nations can enter athletes in any races they want so long as they have a quota. An athlete must be qualified in track cycling and road cycling to be eligible for an additional (unqualified) event?
